My one man tent seems to have a problem with shock cords on one of the supports poles. This tent is REI quarter dome . Anyone else experience any similar problems or any recalls on these ?
Hi @bcs - Thank you for reaching out about the shockcord in your REI Quarter Dome tent pole. Would it be possible to provide us with a bit more information about the problem - has the cord stretched out? Broken? Something else? Understanding the problem a bit more will allow us to provide a more helpful answer.
With that said, we've had a few other customers chatting about tent pole shockcords and you might find this discussion on REI Half Dome 2+ restringing helpful.
If you are interested in replacing the cord yourself, you can order the Liberty Mountain Shockcord - 1/8” diameter by the foot. To determine how much cord to buy, measure the pole length, then add two or three extra feet to give you some cord to work with. Additionally, we recommend taking a look at this Expert Advice article on How to Fix a Tent Pole. It has some great tips and a video on how to replace the shockcord at home.
One of the reasons we were excited to launch this online community was the ability to hear directly from our members, so thank you for reaching out and please know that we have passed your comment along to our Co-op Brands team.
I have the same issue on two Half Domes, two years old and the elastic in the cords deteriorated and broke at most of the pole fold joints. You don’t discover this until you go to set up in the woods and then can’t join the pole sections without spending much time trying to stuff the now elongated cords back into the tiny pole openings. If it had been dark or foul weather this would be a real disaster. Is this regarded as a manufacturing defect?
@Localrider Thanks for reaching out!
We're sorry you are having this issue with your tent poles. We have a couple of threads here in the community that can talk you through how to do the repair yourself. Take a look at some linked above or this one, Replacement Shock Cord for Half Dome 2. They can give you some guidance on how to repair your tent poles yourself. In terms of whether the issue is a manufacturing defect, that is not a determination we can make here in the community. Your best bet is to speak with someone on the customer service team at your local REI store or to contact our sales and customer service team at 1-800-426-4840 or via live chat.
Hopefully this helps, thanks!
