Tent recommendations for car camping and small backpacking trips
Looking to mostly car camp with 2 people and a dog (he's 50 pounds and spoiled-gets to sleep in the tent), want enough room to hold all of us and our gear, but would also like it to be light enough to do small backpacking treks, just a mile or two and could split the weight between us. Was heavily considering the half dome 2 plus, but the reviews about the shock cords and rain proofing scare me. Have any improvements on those been made this year? Or is there a better tent option for what I am looking for? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or updated info on these!

@yhansotte thanks so much for reaching out for suggestions on a camping/backpacking tent! Because you've got a furry friend who's 50lbs and gets to sleep in the tent, we'd highly recommend a 3-person tent. And, because you are going to be backpacking, you'll want to consider the total weight of the tent (and ideally have it weigh less than 6lbs). With those details in mind, here are a few to consider:
Marmot Limelight 3 - freestanding and 3 season, includes the footprint, weight around 6lbs
MSR Zoic 3 - freestanding and 3 season, weight is a bit over 5lbs
Nemo Dagger 3 - freestanding and 3 season, weight is closer to 4lbs
We hope this helps get you started - don't hesitate to reach out with any additional questions you may have!
