Finding the Right Backpack

Once the covid restrictions lift, I am looking to walk from Canterbury, England, to Rome. I'm 59 year old, 5' woman. I do not plan to camp, but I will likely be staying in B&Bs and hostels. I am looking for a backpack that will hold the necessary gear for such a trip. I will not have luggage transfers, but I also will not be needing to worry about cooking any meals or sleeping outdoors. When I went from Assisi to Rome in 2016, I used a Osprey Mira AG 34 with luggage transfers. However, I am looking to complete this pilgrimage in a much more simple fashion. I am wondering if the Mira would still work or if I need to find something larger. Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Hello @C2See, thank you for reaching out through Conversations.

That sounds like an amazing trip! Travel packs can sometimes be a tricky decision, because as you mentioned you are not concerned with cooking/prepping meals and won't be camping out. Have you ever looked at the Osprey Fairview series? They come in a variety of capacities (I use the men's equivalent Farpoint myself) and provide a lot of travel versatility. The overall designs are very functional and each pack within the series possess some unique features, so you can tailor to your needs.

If you have more questions about Osprey or anything else that will help prepare you for your adventure, this is a great opportunity to sign up for a Virtual Outfitting . You get one on one time with a specialist to answer any questions you have, and it's a free service!

At REI, we believe time outside is fundamental to a life well lived.

@REI-DannyB Thanks so much for the information! Will check it out.

Take care and stay safe.
