Changes to the Wonderland Trail Permit System in Mount Rainier National Park in 2021.

Hey there, REI Community!

If you're thinking about hiking the Wonderland Trail this year, the National Park Service has made some changes to the lottery system for permits. In order to help manage the influx of permit requests, there will be an 'early access' lottery that will allow for more complete, full-length hiking itineraries in 2021. The early access application dates are March 2-14, 2021. If you get your dates, you will then be able to select campsites and dial in your trip plan.

Per the website:

"Because demand for trips on the Wonderland Trail and high-use climbing routes exceeds capacity during peak periods, an optional early-access lottery is available. This lottery limits the number of users competing simultaneously for multi-night itineraries, which allows for more complete itineraries overall.

Successful applicants are granted early access to reservations, with the earliest access offering the most options to build a complete Wonderland Trail circuit or secure permits for the most desirable dates."

You can read all the details at the Wilderness Permits section of the Mount Rainier National Park website.

We wanted to tag some of our users who have expressed interest in the Wonderland Trail here as well: @jlechowicz @AdventureMama @nealos @happyhiker @bigAl2 @AdventureGuy @Philreedshikes

Best of luck in the lottery!

At REI, we believe time outside is fundamental to a life well lived.
