Advice: Katadyn BeFree First Time User, Water Flow Issue

I just received my Katadyn BeFree Water Bottle Replacement Filter and seeker bottle and tested it running through 1 liter of water. The filter is slower than expected based on the review videos I have seen. The replacement filter did not come with setup directions so I found the below manuals from Katadyn, both stating for normal operation that I need to unscrew the EZ-Clean Membrane counterclockwise. I do not seem to be able to do this and am wondering if my replacement filter is slower than others or if I do need to untwist something and can't figure out how. Thanks in advance.

 

 

Open the system by holding it at the thread of the Hydrapak® Soft Flask™
(under the bail handle) and unscrew the EZ-Clean Membrane™ counterclockwise

Based on the manual, it appears as though the instructions to unscrew the EZ-Clean Membrane counterclockwise are intended as a step to remove the system from the bladder in order to fill it, not as a way to unlock the flow of water. The membrane and the cap are one unit and are not intended to separate.

Based on a couple reviews of this filter it sounds like some other folks had a similar issue that was resolved with an exchange of their product. It appears this might also be one of those situations. We would recommend running a couple of liters of water through the filter just to see if the flow improves for you, if it doesn't, your best course of action would be to exchange it for a new one.
