Wondering if REI would develop their own version of which the English call a “bothy bag” (Karrimor) — basically a small, box tent without a floor, poles. With the new ultra lightweight waterproof fabrics (Araneum) this item would be useful for emergencies, family lunch breaks in bad weather, ski tour breaks. The advantage over a bivy bag it that it shares body heat, heat from breath and some have an opaque panel for light.

I have to admit, this is a really fascinating learning moment for me! These are a very interesting concept. We had a conversation in the community, I am looking for a free standing rainfly, does such a thing exist?, that this may be a solution for. @deanrmcminn, take a look at this idea as a solution for your son in the Marines. There aren't any poles, but the concept is pretty darn close to what you might be looking for!
Have you personally used one of these? How is the condensation inside?
Thanks for the tip!
