REI is extending our temporary store closures until further notice

REI is responding to the rapidly changing COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) situation with a clear focus on the safety and well-being of employees and customers. We have assembled internal and external teams to advise us on appropriate policies and decisions, and are acting with caution to ensure that we are putting people first.

As a result, we are extending our temporary store closures until further notice.

We will continue to share information regularly as this situation evolves, including posting updates here in the community. You can also review our FAQs for more detail.

Thank you for being responsible and not opening stores.

What about 20% off coupon, will that be extended, I wanted to buy a back pack, was planning on trying one local store tomorrow, Monday 30 Mar, but now the store is closed.

@mmohile at this time, we do not plan to extend our 20% coupon but we'd love to try to help you pick one so you can use your coupon online! If you reply back with some features you want (hydration, how much gear you want to carry, what you want to use it for, etc.), we'd be happy to provide a few suggestions!

Hope this helps!

Same question here.   I could order 3 backpacks online, and then return two, but that seems like a waste of time and resources on many levels.

@Elbert89 thanks for the feedback about hoping we will extend the coupon. At this time, unfortunately, we are not planning to extend the coupon or the sale, but we'd be happy to try to help you narrow down between the 3 packs you're considering. If you let us know the 3 you're looking at and what you want to use the pack for, we can provide some perspective on which one might work best for you, and also try to help you hone in on the right size.

Thanks for the offer, it's more about fit, lot's of experience doing this.  Hoping to do a thru-hike with my son this summer and he wants to try on the three we've narrowed it down to before committing.   This is the kind of thing you just need to have hands on and where the extension of the coupon is needed.

@Elbert89 understood. Fit is certainly essential, especially for a thru-hike. Although we do not currently have plans to extend the current coupon and sale, here are two other options you could consider:

  • If there is a pack you are leaning towards, you could purchase it now using your 20% coupon, and if for any reason it doesn't end up fitting or being the right one, you can exchange it when our stores reopen and have the 20% applied to whatever pack you choose instead.
  • If you'd prefer to wait, although we can't provide specifics, it's highly likely we'll have another coupon/sale again before summer arrives.

Hope one of these options helps a bit.

COVID -19 is here to stay.  Are you going to wait until they have a vaccine to open stores, or until summer when flu season is at a minimum?

@Southernmedicin thanks for the question! As you know, this is a dynamic situation and one that we are closely monitoring. We are aligning our approach nationally to the latest Centers for Disease Control guidance, with the exception of locations where local or regional mandate supersedes what the CDC has recommended. We are prioritizing the health and well-being of our employees, members and communities we serve in all of our decision-making. For now, we are temporarily closing all of our locations until further notice and commit to providing updates through all of our communication channels, including here in the community, as soon as we have them.

Is there a way that REI could provide a way to return items in the interim without opening stores? Perhaps sending a customer a return label or by other means??? Incomes have been impacted by covid-19 and not being able to return items could pose financial constraints on people who could use their money for basic needs or providing support to their family members. I understand the topic of return labels have been brought up but no one has actually provided any solution or response other than the fact that you don’t provide return labels.
