Pants for Snow Shoeing / Hiking in 30 - 50 degree range

What are some good examples of pants that would work for several hours long snow shoeing / hiking with temps ranging from 30's to 50's?

Hi there @thadcaper!!  Great question!

Here are a couple things to take into consideration:

  • Both snowshoeing and hiking are pretty aerobic activities.  Whatever you choose, make sure that it's breathable and quick dry.  You will most certainly sweat, so staying dry equals both comfort and warmth.
  • Layering is key.  Don't forget an appropriate base layer.  Your base layer should fit next to skin so that it effectively wicks moisture.  Remember:  No cotton!  Stick with polyester, wool or silk.  When picking the appropriate base layer weight, remember to take into consideration not only the temperature outside but also the activity you will be doing while wearing it.  Here's a great REI Expert Advice Article on How to Choose Base Layers and here's another Expert Advice Article on Layering Basics.

With that being said, here are my personal favorites, although there are ton of options to choose from!

  •  All around cold weather pants are the REI Co-op Activator Pants.  Here are the men's version and here are the women's version.  These are softshell, meant for aerobic activities in cooler weather.  These would be ideal for snowshoeing in 30 degree temperatures, as well as hiking in cooler temperatures.  These are treated with durable water repellent (DWR) and are wind resistant.
  • Hiking in 50 degree weather, would be the Prana Stretch Zion or the Prana Halle Pants.  Both of these are quick dry, stretchy and also treated with a DWR.  These hiking pants are lighter and less technical than the REI Activator Pants, but paired with a base layer would work great in cooler temps!

I hope this is helpful!  Have fun out there!!

At REI, we believe time outside is fundamental to a life well lived.

So helpful, thank you!
