From a practical point of view you don't necessarily need a physical membership card. I store my card number on a smartphone app along with a stack of other membership, frequent flyer and other loyalty programs.
In my case these are stored in Google Pay's "Passes" section. But there are even dedicated, free apps for this purpose like StoCard.
