Hi - I purchased Salomon XUltra hiking shoes and can't tell if they're too tight. Should hiking shoes and boots feel a bit tighter or a bit looser before taking them on the trail? My well-worn Salomon boots are a size 11 and fit great but these shoes feel a bit too tight at the same size 11. If I wear them on a day hike will it be too late to return them to REI?

Finding that sweet spot in your hiking footwear can be a challenge! You want your shoes to have enough room that you are comfortable and your feet have room to swell (totally normal during the day!) as you hike. However, you also want them to fit well enough that you minimize movement within the shoe to help prevent blisters, hot spots, and toes getting smashed.
Sometimes, depending on the shoe and the person wearing it, hiking shoes can break in and give you a little more room as you wear them. It sounds like the pair you have might be too tight from the get go, but that's a determination you have to make. Fortunately, you have REI's 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and Return Policy to help you make the best decision about your footwear. As long as it is within a year of purchase, if you wear them on a day hike it will not be too late to return them if they don't work for you.
Hopefully this helps!
