Girls' dress sizes

My granddaughter wears a size 12 dress.  But when I tried to buy a dress at REI it only gives S, M, L, XL.  How do the number and letter sizes compare so I know she is getting the size 12?

While each brand will slightly vary, a size large will fit a size range of about 12-14.  Before selecting a size on the dress you’re looking to buy, right above there is a size chart specifically for that piece of clothing.
