Is it safe to park a car at Gooch Gap overnight? Looking at doing Hightower Gap to Gooch Gap and hoping to park at Gooch.
Hi @nathanu - This is a great question! Hopefully someone in this group has recent experience with that parking lot and can fill you in on what they know.
The last time I was in the Dahlonega area, we opted out of parking at Gooch Gap because the road to get to it was in such poor condition. The forest service road to get to that little parking area is known to be rough and somewhat difficult to navigate.
You could check in with the rangers of the Blue Ridge District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee NF to see if they can offer up current conditions or suggestions. Their number is 706-745-6928.
Additionally, Woody's Gap is only a couple of miles from Gooch Gap and there tends to be shuttles between the two lots. While that is another piece of logistics to add to your trip, it might be worth looking into if the road isn't in great shape.
Hopefully this helps!
According to the AT Parking website, parking there is "great", if somewhat muddy in rainy weather. Access roads are in good shape, according to a 2013 report. http://appalachiantrail.rohland.org/
