Appalachian Trail/Overnight camping near NYC?

I'm a person who would love to camp more, and I know the AT comes right by the city, and I know that public transit can bring me nearby.

But can you just camp anywhere on the AT, even if you're not a thru hiker? You can just get onto the trail and set your tent up anywhere?

How does it work?

@StatenIslanderYou're allowed to so long as you're not within the boundaries of a state park (such as Harriman-in which case you have to follow their rules and camp by a lean to). Otherwise, the same rules apply throughout the whole trail unless posted otherwise. Another option is to get to Tuxedo NY and get into Harriman that way.

I've done that, but it's *brutal* in the heat from the Tuxedo Station to the woods. No tree cover, difficult walks alongside/crossing highways. I can do it, but I can't believe that's the easiest!

What about up by Anthony's Nose?

Also - If it's not a state park, what is it? Private? Federal?
