{"id":9775,"date":"2016-10-17T09:44:58","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T16:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=9775"},"modified":"2025-11-21T10:53:01","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T18:53:01","slug":"rei-partners-with-8-artists-to-create-360-degree-art-installations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/camp\/rei-partners-with-8-artists-to-create-360-degree-art-installations","title":{"rendered":"8 Artists to Create 360-Degree Art Installations for REI Stores"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p>This fall, REI zooms in more closely on its local communities by collaborating with local artists in three markets\u2014Los Angeles, Austin and Chicago\u2014to create installations that examine the intersection of art and nature.<\/p>\n<p>The art installations were built within warehouse spaces where videographers were able to capture footage of the process. The artists had a few weeks to plan followed by one 24-hour period to execute their pieces. During the 24 hours, the artists collaborated to create a series of panels that form 360-degree installations depicting their personal connections with nature and their local surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>The artistic process was documented in each market by a film crew, who captured footage to create two videos of each group of artists: first, short editorial videos introducing the artists and their respective cities; and, second, interactive 360-degree videos in which users can toggle around and watch as the installations grow into completed pieces. Check them out on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL7tqTAgUK4UyAlG_u1VQ9R1h8-DmAlWi8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REI&#8217;s YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Los Angeles, California<\/h4>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/J6A8527-web.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"REI Store 360-degree art\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From left to right: Christina Angelina and Yoskay Yamamoto completed their piece in 17 hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe Mother Nature is the original artist.\u201d That\u2019s Los Angeles artist <a href=\"http:\/\/yoskay.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoskay Yamamoto<\/a>, who collaborated with local muralist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christinaangelina.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christina Angelina<\/a> to create a dreamy, other-worldly depiction of Los Angeles\u2019 limitless outdoor playground. \u201cI enjoy a good hike and sunsets,\u201d said Yamamoto, who hails from Japan. \u201cThis project inspired me to spend more time outdoors and experience nature more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/IMG-3409-web.jpg?resize=1024%2C221\" alt=\"REI Store 360-degree art\" width=\"1024\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Finished piece for Los Angeles:\u00a0<em>Replenishing SoCal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>Chicago, Illinois<\/h4>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9782\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/DSC-0796-web.jpg?resize=1024%2C680\" alt=\"REI Store 360-degree art\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From left to right: Esteban del Valle, Lauren Feece, and Ruben Aguirre Jr. completed their piece in 14 hours.<\/p>\n<p>In Chicago, three artists came together to collaborate on an installation that\u2019s two parts painting, one part sculpture. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenfeece.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lauren Feece<\/a>, who at one point lived deep in the Puerto Rican jungle, painted a storybook depiction of a forest opposite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.estebandelvalle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Esteban del Valle<\/a>\u2019s superhero-like outdoor enthusiast. The paintings surround a fluid, three-dimensional representation of water by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theshiftchange.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruben Aguirre Jr<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cMy work is an extension of graffiti, design and muralism,\u201d said Aguirre Jr. about his everyday work as an artist. \u201cI look at spaces and figure out how to respond to them in a way that contributes to the space, but also challenges it.\u201d He continues, \u201cI then use color, form, patterns and shapes to create a visual language that ultimately brings to life what might be an ordinary wall.\u201d It\u2019s obvious that Aguirre Jr., who used a color palette inspired by Chicago\u2019s own Lake Michigan, employs the same concepts in this installation.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9781\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/Chicago-Access-Point-Retouch-TN-web.jpg?resize=1024%2C221\" alt=\"REI Store 360-degree art\" width=\"1024\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Finished piece for Chicago:\u00a0<em>Nurturing the Urban Jungle.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Austin, Texas<\/h4>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/DSC-0519-web.jpg?resize=1024%2C680\" alt=\"REI Store 360-degree art\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From left to right: Roshi, El Federico, and Niz completed their piece in 15 hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was hilarious and cozy,\u201d says Austin-based artist Roshaun \u201cRoshi\u201d Krauthiem of painting alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/fe-de-rico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federico \u201cEl Federico\u201d Archuleta<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nizgraphics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eleanor \u201cNiz\u201d Herasimchuk<\/a> inside the installation itself for 15 hours straight. Roshi often pulls from what she calls \u201cmystical worlds where strong goddesses, gentle plants and impossible shapes exist,\u201d so her ability to incorporate circular protrusions in the canvas into her river depiction appears natural to the viewer. She also thought a lot about her local environment: \u201cI was inspired by the hibiscus and bamboo that grow in Austin\u2019s greenbelts. Both species were introduced to Austin, and like the constant influx of new residents, they set down roots and flourished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/Austin-Access-Point-Pana-web.jpg?resize=1024%2C209\" alt=\"REI Store 360-degree art\" width=\"1024\" height=\"209\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Artists pose with the completed Austin piece:\u00a0<em>Keeping Austin Weird.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>REI\u2019s art installations reflect artists with varied backgrounds, styles and experience with the outdoors. Some get outside every day; others are more studio-bound but often work in outdoor environments.\u00a0The collaborations were celebrated in-store with artist meet &amp; greets featuring local\u00a0DJs and delicious food.
