Explore a new part of your neighborhood, train for a race you&#8217;ve been eyeing or invest in fresh running gear that\u2019ll motivate you to get out the door. Pick a few goals that are attainable and won\u2019t take all year to complete. Achievable victories\u2013from trying run\/walk intervals to getting that 10 minutes of core work done once a week\u2013will pay off in the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019re totally new to running or a seasoned marathoner, here are a few goals to get you sprinting into 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103795\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103795\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-103795\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/Feist_051118_55557.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"Two trail runners run together on a wooded trail.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-103795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Try running someplace new\u2014a trail you&#8217;ve never been on before or a neighborhood of a city you&#8217;ve never explored.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>Explore a new trail<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to get bogged down by the repetition of the same loops you\u2019ve been running year after year. Switch things up and search for a trail network you haven\u2019t visited before or try running with someone who knows different routes. \u201cDiscovering new trails keeps me motivated because I\u2019m excited to find out what\u2019s around every corner,\u201d says Kelly Halpin, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/b\/la-sportiva\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Sportiva<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trail-running athlete. \u201cI love exploring and being present in a different area.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you live in an urban area, branch out by jogging through a neighborhood you haven\u2019t spent much time in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Train for a race<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training for an event can be a great motivator to stay consistent. Sign up for a 5K that benefits a local charity or choose a race in a city you\u2019ve always wanted to visit. Having a goal in mind while she\u2019s running helps Halpin keep on track. \u201cI like to envision whatever big feat I\u2019m trying to accomplish while I\u2019m doing tempo workouts and training runs,\u201d she says. \u201cI believe it sets you up for success.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103820\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103820\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-103820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/Content_Team_071819_00011.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"A runner stretches her quad before heading out.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-103820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Start and end your run with some dynamic stretching like lunges or leg swings, and your body will thank you.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>Stretch more<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone else guilty of rushing through a stretching routine or skipping it all together? Try to take just 10 minutes to do some dynamic stretching\u2013meaning you go through the full range of motion a few times rather than holding the stretch\u2013before running out the door. Gianna Risoli, a physical therapist in Jackson, Wyoming, said a few minutes of dynamic stretching can make a big difference in preventing injuries. For runners, Risoli recommended movements that focus on the calf and the front of the thigh, like heel raises and lunges. \u201cLack of mobility in those regions can increase a runner\u2019s risk of injury,\u201d she said. After your run, static stretching can temporarily relieve soreness. Risoli recommended a standing calf stretch and standing quad stretch to start, then a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bnVfloe6yTo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half-kneeling quad and hip flexor stretch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFoam rolling as well as a dynamic warmup can be beneficial,&#8221; she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Join a running group<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to meet training partners, discover trails and stay accountable, a running group could help. Most groups host weekly runs at all levels, ranging from those training for a 5K to ultradistance runs. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/topics\/running\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meetup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> website is an easy way to search for groups in your area, and a good resource if you\u2019re traveling and want to join some local runners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can\u2019t find a club nearby? Start your own. Enlist a few friends, hang posters around town and set a weekly time and place to meet. Developing a community you can rely on will keep running fresh and exciting, with the added bonus of catching up with friends old and new.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103839\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103839\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-103839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/Vagnini_091216_0291.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"A runner ties his shoe laces before a run. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-103839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Those old shoes you love have put in the miles; now it&#8217;s time you treated your feet to a fresh pair.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>Buy new running shoes (finally)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new pair of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/c\/running-shoes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">running shoes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might be the extra boost you need to push your running to the next stage, or just keep doing it consistently. In general, it\u2019s a good idea to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/replace-shoes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replace running shoes after 300 to 500 miles<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the midsoles can stop absorbing shock as efficiently. But different runners may see their shoes wear down at different stages, so check for excessive wear-and-tear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buying a new pair of running shoes can feel overwhelming. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/running-shoes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing a pair of shoes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, think about the type of terrain you\u2019ll be running on. If you plan to run on rugged trails, look for shoes with a heavy tread and lugged soles that will help with stability on uneven terrain. If you\u2019ll be doing most of your running on asphalt or pavement, lighter shoes with extra cushioning are a good choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Bring someone new into running<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything\u2019s more fun with a buddy. Encourage a friend to get into running or volunteer with a program like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.girlsontherun.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Girls on the Run<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nonprofit that empowers young women all over the country by creating a running community and progressing up to run a 5K race. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see the growth in the girls we coach,\u201d said Katherine Fischer, a GOTR coach in Burlington, Vermont. \u201cHelping empower them to be more confident in themselves and their abilities means a lot to me and motivates me as a runner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Take rest days<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may seem like the antithesis of setting a goal to run more, but recovery days will increase your longevity as a runner, helping you to stay healthy and avoid burnout. Risoli said that one of the biggest mistakes a runner can make is to not take the time to recover between sessions. \u201cRecovery is just as, if not more, important that the actual training because it\u2019s the time the body is remodeling and becoming stronger,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you skip this step, your body keeps breaking down and could result in injury.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And mix it up\u2014cross-training does a body good. Running is such a linear, repetitive and high-impact activity, Risoli said it can be good to add in some lower-impact activities, too. \u201cBiking, rowing or swimming are great ways to cross-train and continue to build endurance when you\u2019re not running,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When setting goals for the year, it\u2019s important to remember that the key to success in New Year\u2019s resolutions is to start small.
