Today, Joyciline Jepkosgei (25) won the women\u2019s race in her marathon debut while Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor (26) dominated the men\u2019s event for the second time in three years. Manuela Sch\u00e4r (34) and Daniel Romanchuk (21) were victorious in the women\u2019s and men\u2019s wheelchair divisions. Both Sch\u00e4r and Romanchuk took the women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s titles in the push-rim divisions of the <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/boston-marathon-wraps-up-with-a-dramatic-finish\">Boston Marathon<\/a> this spring.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Shalane Flanagan won the 2017 New York City Marathon, she was the first American woman to accomplish the feat in 40 years. She neared the finish line pumping her fists and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6xzYA0LPDX0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famously swearing in joy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and her win served as notice to the world that American women marathoners had arrived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flanagan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B34cW4kgzMt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced her retirement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week at age 38 to become a coach with the legendary Bowerman Track Club. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver the last 15 years I found out what I was capable of, and it was more than I ever dreamed possible,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flanagan said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B34cW4kgzMt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that all is said and done, I am most proud of the consistently high level of running I produced year after year. No matter what I accomplished the year before, it never got any easier. Each season, each race was hard, so hard. But this I know to be true: Hard things are wonderful, beautiful and give meaning to life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After her announcement, runners the world over reflected on her achievements, positive attitude and lasting legacy. \u201cIn both college and later as a pro, Shalane never shied away from her ambition,\u201d said Lauren Fleshman, a two-time national champion in the 5,000 meters. \u201cIt was somewhat jarring at first, but it made the rest of us think, \u2018Why can\u2019t I do that?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time and again, Flanagan served as an example and leader for women\u2019s distance running in the United States, winning 16 national titles throughout her career. Over the years, Flanagan demonstrated the importance of persistence. \u201cWhen she won New York, it was after seven years at the distance,\u201d said Mario Fraioli, author of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themorningshakeout.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morning Shakeout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a running newsletter. \u201cShe was an example of how consistency and long-term work pay off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few months after Flanagan\u2019s win in New York, American runner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/des_linden\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Des Linden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went on to capture the 2018 title at the Boston Marathon. \u201cThat sent a message that this current group of American women are a force to be reckoned with,\u201d said Chris Weiller, senior vice president of media for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrr.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Road Runners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the organization that puts on the New York City Marathon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A stacked field\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Flanagan won\u2019t be running the 2019 New York City Marathon this Sunday, Nov. 3, her legacy will be on display. The event promises to showcase just how deep today\u2019s American women\u2019s marathon field runs. Linden, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ryanandsarahall.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sara Hall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kellyn_taylor\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kellyn Taylor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and others should be in the mix for top spots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Fraioli\u2019s perspective, no one stands out as the obvious choice for a win or podium finish. \u201cYou\u2019ve got Des, a Boston winner and consistent player in New York who knows how to race the course,\u201d he said. \u201cSara Hall is intriguing coming off of a PR in Berlin and a win at the U.S. 10-mile championships right after. If she\u2019s not cooked, she could have a good day in New York.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expect <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aliphine\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aliphine Tuliamuk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be in the thick of it as well. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kiefferallie\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allie Kieffer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who placed fifth in the 2017 New York City Marathon, also intends to race and after time off for injury, she may be hungry to prove herself. (Photo Courtesy of New York City Marathon)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Americans will certainly be in the mix for the podium, their task won\u2019t be made easy by their international competitors. Expect defending and four-time champion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marykeitany\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Keitany<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Kenya to be a heavy favorite, along with this year\u2019s Boston champion,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worknesh Degefa of Ethiopia, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the top women stand to follow in Flanagan\u2019s footsteps at this weekend\u2019s race if they have the right day. Flanagan herself will be providing commentary the day of, adding her wisdom and support to the women\u2019s field. Afterward, she\u2019ll start the next chapter of her life as an elite-level coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShalane coaching is as good as it gets,\u201d said Fleshman. \u201cShe\u2019ll proceed with that same confidence, that same \u2018why not me?\u2019 attitude. Americans Jared Ward and the three Tylers\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tylermccandless.wordpress.com\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCandless<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tylerpennelrunning.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pennel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tylerjermann\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jermann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014all enter the race in good form, according to Weiller. From outside the United States, defending champ from Ethiopia Lelisa Desisa returns, along with fellow countryman Shura Kitata, who placed a close second last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tune in<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To watch this weekend\u2019s New York City Marathon, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrr.org\/tcsnycmarathon\/race-day\/watch-the-race\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spectate from the sidelines or stream the live broadcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from wherever you are.
