{"id":91880,"date":"2019-10-24T12:03:02","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T19:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=91880"},"modified":"2019-11-05T08:44:54","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T16:44:54","slug":"five-states-join-formal-commitment-to-grow-outdoor-recreation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/news\/five-states-join-formal-commitment-to-grow-outdoor-recreation","title":{"rendered":"Five States Join Formal Commitment to Grow Outdoor Recreation"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid growing awareness <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/news\/numbers-show-size-of-the-outdoor-recreation-economy-at-the-state-level\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that outdoor recreation is a major driver of social and economic value<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, five states Thursday<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">committed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to a set of guiding outdoor principles aimed at growing the nation\u2019s economy, joining the eight states that created the agreement in 2018.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outdoor leaders from Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico and Virginia signed the commitment\u2014called the Outdoor Recreation Industry Confluence Accords\u2014this morning at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/utahoutdoorsummit.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a three-day gathering that encourages recreation discussion among industry, government, nonprofit and other stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The accords are meant to promote the outdoor industry and the benefits it provides to states. They were first <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/news\/bipartisan-states-join-forces-to-support-outdoor-recreation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed in July 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a bipartisan group of outdoor recreation directors from Colorado, Montana, North Carolina, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joining states agree to 12 principles under the four pillars of stewardship and conservation; education and workforce training; economic development; and public health, according to a news release by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Governors Association (NGA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nonprofit that offers public policy guidance to state governors. NGA supports the states that sign the accords, though it doesn\u2019t influence the principles themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This news comes just weeks after <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/news\/new-hampshire-becomes-16th-state-to-add-dedicated-outdoor-recreation-office\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Hampshire announced it would be joining 15 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in creating a state office dedicated to promoting the growing outdoor recreation economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nationwide, <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/news\/numbers-show-size-of-the-outdoor-recreation-economy-at-the-state-level\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the outdoor industry accounted for $427 billion of GDP in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The industry grew faster than the overall U.S. economy that year and accounted for 2.2 percent of U.S. GDP, according to a September report by the Department of Commerce\u2019s Bureau of Economic Analysis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Weinstein, state and local policy director for the Outdoor Industry Association, said the accords are significant because they allow states to underscore the importance of outdoor recreation. Weinstein said that in the past several decades, federal spending on the outdoor industry has dropped from 2 percent of the national discretionary budget to 1 percent. The accords can help states partner and identify sources of funding, said Sue Gander, director of energy, infrastructure and environment at NGA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals in states that have committed to the accords could see any number of benefits, including more money to invest in things like trails and university partnerships that promote outdoor recreation education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe statement that these states are making is that \u2018yes, we recognize the significance [of the outdoor industry] from Maine all the way to Oregon. Outdoor recreation is a unifying factor. It\u2019s apolitical, and it does a lot of good for the country,\u201d Weinstein said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc Berejka, REI\u2019s director of government and community affairs, said the movement of states recognizing the value of the outdoors\u2014and its influence on health, community, education, environment and economy\u2014is gaining steam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn this country, when you have 13 states agreeing to a shared vision of the role of nature in our lives, you\u2019re on to something
