Outdoor recreation comprises 3.3 percent of the state&#8217;s GDP, and the move formalizes the state\u2019s commitment to the businesses, natural assets and attractions that make up New Hampshire&#8217;s outdoor industry, according to the department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis office will allow us to better leverage the tremendous outdoor recreation opportunities we have here in the Granite State to not only grow the industry, but attract the workforce of the future,\u201d Sununu said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Following New Mexico, Nevada, Wisconsin and Virginia, <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/state-offices-get-boost-from-new-recreation-focused-network\">New Hampshire is the fifth state in 2019<\/a> to create a new division dedicated to promoting the outdoor industry, which employs nearly 38,000 people in New Hampshire. Nationwide, the outdoor industry accounted for <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/numbers-show-size-of-the-outdoor-recreation-economy-at-the-state-level\">\u00a0$427 billion of GDP in 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>BEA Commissioner Taylor Caswell said state leaders throughout the country are still beginning to recognize the value of the outdoor recreation industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to have a position like this, where you can customize to the experience and the needs of your state, is really a valuable thing,\u201d he said. \u201cOutdoor recreation is a huge part of lifestyle, but it\u2019s also part of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2026 our effort to recruit business, workforce, tourists and students, so it\u2019s pretty exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recruiting a younger workforce to the state will be a key focus of the office, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to utilize [this office] to really marry up what we feel is a very natural combination of recreation assets with a very, very hot economy and continue the trends we\u2019re seeing \u2026 in millennial migration,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other priorities include attracting outdoor equipment manufacturers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including boutique businesses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and improving access to public land and water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People recreating in the state can enjoy skiing, <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/cycle\/best-places-winter-fat-biking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fat biking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, kayaking, <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/hike\/best-white-mountain-hikes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hiking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or engaging in water sports at the coast or in the Lakes Region, Caswell said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you live here, skiing a few runs or riding single-track on a Thursday afternoon is part of your everyday life,\u201d he said in the news release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A job posting for the office\u2019s director will be available in the next four to six weeks.
