This daytime pause wasn\u2019t an act of truancy. People took to the streets around the globe to demand climate action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s what you need to know:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An estimated 4 million people in more than 150 countries took part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalclimatestrike.net\/\">Global Climate Strike<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/350.org\/\">350.org<\/a>, one of the groups organizing the strike.<\/li>\n<li>The youth-led demonstration advocated for things like implementing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/bills\/hres109\/BILLS-116hres109ih.pdf\">Green New Deal<\/a>, restoring biodiversity and respecting Indigenous land.<\/li>\n<li>The strike comes less than a week before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/\">U.N. Climate Action Summit<\/a> in New York.<\/li>\n<li>The youth climate movement has largely been inspired by Swedish student Greta Thunberg, who began protesting climate inaction outside her country\u2019s parliament last year.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/news\/what-to-expect-from-the-youth-led-global-climate-strikes\">Read our preview coverage<\/a>\u00a0of the strikes across the country, including in Boston, Washington, D.C., Seattle, and Anchorage, Alaska.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Anchorage Update: 4:30pm PT (7:30pm EST)<\/h4>\n<p>Youth are taking the mic in Anchorage, expressing why climate change is an important issue to them and their communities. Youth traveled not just from Anchorage but from all over the state\u2014from Unalakleet to Utqiagvik.<\/p>\n<p>Esau Sinnok, 21, is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourchildrenstrust.org\/alaska\">more than a dozen youth suing the\u00a0state of Alaska<\/a> for its role in contributing to climate change, stating the state\u2019s climate and energy policy violated their constitutional rights.\u00a0The case is expected to be heard by the Alaska Supreme Court in the <a href=\"https:\/\/public.courts.alaska.gov\/web\/scheduled\/docs\/oac-sc.pdf\">coming weeks<\/a> and Sinnok encouraged youth at the strike to attend.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_84671\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84671\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-84671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/09\/IMG_1891_Esau_Edit.jpg?resize=1024%2C768\" alt=\"Esau Sinnok\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-84671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Esau Sinnok (Photo Credit: Caitlin Goettler)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sinnok is originally from Shishmaref, an arctic community on the shores of the Chukchi Sea that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2018-10-22\/alaskan-village-falling-sea-washington-looking-other-way\">experiencing melting sea ice and coastal erosion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, he first got involved in climate justice efforts when he was 17 and participated in a social justice summit sponsored by the Sierra Club. Since then, he\u2019s been an Arctic Youth Ambassador and participated in AYEA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a red versus blue issue, not Democrat versus Republican. It\u2019s a nonpartisan issue,\u201d Sinnok said. \u201cThe animals, the land, the sea, the ice, they have no party. It\u2019s a human issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs in Sinnok v. State of Alaska are hoping their case will force the state to evaluate its relationship with the oil and gas industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeking policy change,\u201d Sinnok said. \u201cThe state\u2019s energy policy promotes extraction of fossil fuels. We need a new policy that transitions us to renewable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_84626\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84626\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-84626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/09\/IMG_1889_edit.jpg?resize=1024%2C768\" alt=\"Climate Strike in Anchorage, Alaska\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-84626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Caitlin Goettler<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Seattle Update: 4pm PT (7pm EST)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once at Seattle City Hall, demonstrators took over the steps, celebrating with bubble blowers, chants and intermittent applause. Together, they formed a sea of <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/the-best-signs-from-global-climate-strike\">signs<\/a> that read things like, \u201cThe Earth Used to be Cooler.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kshama Sawant, a Seattle City Council member, was among a number of people\u2014from students to members of the local business community\u2014who spoke to the energized demonstrators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sawant told the crowd they need more than individual change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need system change,\u201d she said. Soon, she had the crowd chanting: \u201cSystem change, not climate change!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenna Dimock, 32, of Seattle, sat on the City Hall steps alongside her friend, Annie Tempest, 29.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dimock said the large turnout reminded her of the Women\u2019s March she attended. She added that the youth demonstration is an incredible call to action for adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The energy of the youth demonstrators was also inspiring, she said, explaining that she witnessed a group of them \u201ctake over\u201d the train she shared with them in the morning. They were all headed to the strike. Just young people, no adults, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a party on the light rail this morning,\u201d she said, laughing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_84639\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84639\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-84639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/09\/Seattle_Sign_IMG_2393.gif?resize=1024%2C1100\" alt=\"A sign that reads: &quot;Act Now or Swim Later&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1100\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-84639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Sarah Grothjan<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, she admitted the strike did give her some negative emotions, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt really inspired, but it also made me sad,\u201d she said. \u201cI was thinking about what I was doing at 13, which was not being concerned with [climate]. It makes me sad that this is what we brought ourselves to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, she said that while some strikes focus only on the negative, this one left her feeling hopeful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt really feels like we have momentum,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every person at City Hall participated in the full strike like Dimock. Some had other obligations\u2014like school. Delilah Moore, 11, visited City Hall with her stepdad only after she got out of class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite not participating in the walk, Moore said she spent much of her day talking about the Earth and ways to protect it. Several of her teachers talked about the global strikes, she said. She even joined a couple of friends to pick up trash Friday and is now considering starting a club to involve more of her classmates in litter collection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing outside City Hall Friday, she said she was happy to see so many people her age demonstrating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s good they know what\u2019s going on,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SeattleClimateStrike?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SeattleClimateStrike<\/a> winds down, two student advocates share what they\u2019ve taken away from the experience. In any other community, the weather may deter people from showing up to an outdoor event. But Alaska youth turned out to the climate strike in full force, donning raincoats, umbrellas and XTRATUF boots.<\/p>\n<p>Young people were adapting by hanging tarps between posts so people could write letters to leaders and put finishing touches on their signs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_84625\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84625\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-84625\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/09\/IMG_1888_edit.jpg?resize=1024%2C768\" alt=\"Climate Strike in Anchorage, Alaska\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-84625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Caitlin Goettler<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lynette Phan, 22, has provided support in helping youth organize the local strike through the Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) group. Like her fellow Alaskans, she felt the issue of climate change was too important to stay out of the rain today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlaska has the most coastline [of any state] so we\u2019re at the forefront of climate change,\u201d Phan said. \u201cThis issue impacts my home and my people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phan, originally from Dutch Harbor, is hoping leaders will take notice of the number of people and the passion behind today\u2019s strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope they recognize how many of us there are,\u201d Phan said. \u201cWe need everyone to fight; we can\u2019t do it ourselves. And there is no time to sit and wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Seattle Update: 2pm PT (5pm EST)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 12:30pm, thousands of cheering demonstrators began their march toward Seattle City Hall. They raised their signs and voices as spectators smiled from inside buildings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat do we want? Green New Deal! When do we want it? Now!\u201d The group cheered as they made their way through Seattle streets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group included approximately 5,000 demonstrators, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/350.org\/\">350.org<\/a>. Others raised hands for a quick high five. A few simply smiled. The demonstration remained largely peaceful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosemary Trimmer, of Seattle, marched alongside her 12-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter. She drove to Cal Anderson Park earlier in the day in her electric car for pre-march festivities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is something I\u2019ve believed in for 20-something years, but it\u2019s really good my kids care enough about their future to ask me to get them out of school to come,\u201d Trimmer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her son, who didn\u2019t want to be named, said he talks with his family about climate change. He\u2019s participated in past marches, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/04\/29\/us\/climate-change-march\/index.html\">2017 People\u2019s Climate March<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/marchforscience.org\">March for Science<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s awesome because there are so many people,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We asked people what\u2019s inspiring them to take a stand against the climate crisis at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SeattleClimateStrike?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SeattleClimateStrike<\/a>. I\u2019m 14. And I\u2019m so scared,\u201d she said to an enthusiastic crowd of students and adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c2032 will only be the third presidential cycle that I can vote in. [From then], it\u2019ll take two more presidential cycles until I\u2019m old enough to run for president in 2040,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat will the world look like then?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olivia Schroeder, 17, asked for action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have a vote. We do have a voice,\u201d she said. \u201cSo right now we are doing what we need to do. We are using that voice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crowd erupted in applause. Schroeder continued by sharing her passion for <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/what-to-expect-from-the-youth-led-global-climate-strikes\">marine conservation<\/a> and her fear over rising oceans and dying marine life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am striking because I believe in the power of youth, the power of this movement and in the power of advocacy as a whole,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe point of this movement\u2014the point of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movement\u2014is to take charge and fight for the planet and fight for the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Young advocates around the globe are fighting for their future. Stand up! Fight back!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demonstrators reached the State House shortly before 2pm local time, where the chants continued, with throngs of people stretching down Park and Tremont Streets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been increasingly worried about climate change for awhile now,\u201d said Maggie Sullivan, 34, a lawyer from Boston. \u201cThat concern has escalated: One with the 2016 election, two with scientific reports that have been coming out and three with my decision to have kids\u2014and my beautiful daughter.
