Though dogs must be leashed, the well-packed trail is a great place for less athletically inclined pups to stretch their legs on easy terrain. Plus, the route is never far from the water, meaning you and your dog will enjoy the cooler temps along this peaceful, conifer-lined loop. Keep in mind, dogs are not allowed to swim in the lake. The trail meanders under cottonwoods, along a pond and past a small farm with horses and other livestock. Pups can roam off-leash as long as they are under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bouldercolorado.gov\/osmp\/dogs-on-osmp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voice and sight control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and there&#8217;s plenty to satisfy a curious dog&#8217;s nose in the grassy meadows. Although your pup may be tempted to go for a swim, restrain their enthusiasm for watersports until after the hike, as dogs aren&#8217;t allowed in the Boulder Valley Ranch pond. The (mostly) gentle grades and well-packed paths make for easy hiking among the trail&#8217;s towering sandstone formations, and while you can mix and match routes to create your own adventure, this 4-mile loop takes in many of the best sights. Dogs are allowed on leash on the trails, and there\u2019s an\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenofgods.com\/park-info\/park-1\/dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-leash area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just east of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosprings.gov\/rock-ledge-ranch-historic-site\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where you can snap a photo or two of the magnificent backdrop while your pup explores on their own. The loop overlooks the plains to the east and the Rocky Mountains to the west, and with just over 600 feet of elevation gain and a summit of 7,841-foot Mount Falcon, it\u2019s a great place to wear out energetic dogs. The area is still recovering from the 2012 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcgov.com\/utilities\/what-we-do\/water\/water-quality\/source-water-monitoring\/special-studies\/hewlett-gulch-high-park-wildfires\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hewlett Gulch Fire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and while there are some burned trees that mildly mar the view, the resulting meadows makes it easy to keep your dog in sight while letting them run wild. The green space is home to over 35 miles of trail, and this hike is a pleasant combination of easy trekking in alpine meadows and rocky climbs through well-shaded aspen and pine forests, giving your four-legged friends a variety of terrain to explore. There are several water crossings and open meadows for your dog to investigate as you climb nearly 2,000 feet up the Grizzly Creek drainage. The trail tops out at over 12,000 feet, so be sure all members of your hiking party are acclimated to the altitude before you start (dogs can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/dog\/can-your-pet-suffer-altitude-sickness\">altitude sickness<\/a> too). Plan to spend some time at the lake\u2014this hike will definitely wear out energetic dogs, so you\u2019ll want time to give their legs (and yours) a break before heading back.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hikingproject.com\/trail\/7001542\/bighorn-creek\"><b>Bighorn Creek<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Eagles Nest Wilderness, 5 miles east of Vail, CO<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Length<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 10.3-mile out-and-back<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Difficulty Rating<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Intermediate\/difficult<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Best For<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A less-traveled trail through a stunning mountain valley<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Dogs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leashed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for a less-crowded trail, this hike up Bighorn Creek, near <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vailgov.com\/welcome-to-vail\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fits the bill. Heading into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/whiteriver\/recarea\/?recid=81106\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eagles Nest Wilderness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the trail is not as busy as some of the resort town\u2019s other well-known destinations. You and your pup can enjoy a scenic climb through a wide valley with aspen groves and fields of seasonal wildflowers. The views of the Gore Range from the base of Bighorn Pass are mesmerizing, and keep an eye out for mountain goats on the rocky slopes above. Though you can climb to the top of the pass, it requires some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/climbing-bouldering-rating.html\">Class 3+ scrambling<\/a> and should only be attempted by more experienced hikers and fit, sure-footed dogs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hikingproject.com\/trail\/7051543\/zirkel-circle\"><b>Zirkel Circle<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Mount Zirkel Wilderness, 31 miles north of Steamboat Springs, CO<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Length<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 10.4-mile loop<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Difficulty Rating<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Intermediate\/difficult<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Best For<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A dog-friendly backpacking adventure\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Dogs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leashed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This 10-plus-mile loop in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/mbr\/recarea\/?recid=80838\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount Zirkel Wilderness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an ideal first backpacking trip for dogs and people alike for many reasons. With its shorter length, this is a great loop to help get your dog accustomed to their new hiking pack or booties. The trails are a pleasant mix of shady pine and conifer forests and sunny high-alpine meadows, giving your dog a variety of terrain to explore. During most of the year, you should have access to water at Gilpin Lake, Gold Creek Lake and several streams along the route. Plus, with no permits required for dispersed camping in the area<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, logistics are a breeze.
