But these days, running has become more complicated, with elaborate <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/run\/running-recovery-tips-from-around-the-world\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recovery routines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?s=watches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smart watches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/run\/what-i-listen-to-while-i-run\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-tech earbuds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and even <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/111062\/wahoo-fitness-rpm-cadence-sensor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performance-tracking sensors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> built into your shoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how much does all that extra stuff actually improve your running time or aid in recovery? We decided to look into it. So we gathered a colorful cross-section of gear and training techniques\u2014some mainstream, some a bit quirky\u2014and asked an expert runner, Alex Hutchinson, a Toronto-based journalist and runner who wrote the 2018 book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/41014339-endure\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to weigh in.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_74994\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74994\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-74994\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/Watch_Content_Team_052018_0020.jpg?resize=1024%2C768\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-74994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running watches will track your activity, but they won&#8217;t necessarily make you a better runner.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>GPS Sports Watches<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you like a time-keeping, mileage-tracking device strapped to your wrist that also syncs to your music library and is able to call, text, offer directions and even buy things while on the go? Welcome to the world of GPS watches. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/landia\/article\/PIIS2213-8587(16)30284-4\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that wearing fitness trackers doesn\u2019t necessarily have a long-term impact on one\u2019s health and fitness, but they can be good short-term motivators. On the high end, there\u2019s the<\/span><a href=\"\/product\/138562\/garmin-fenix-5-plus-sapphire-gps-watch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Garmin Fenix 5 Plus Sapphire GPS Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which offers wizardry like a tool that spits out a route for you in a new place, with prompts on where and when to turn. For a great simplified option, check out <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/116359\/polar-m200-gps-heart-rate-monitor-watch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polar M200 GPS Heart Rate Monitor Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a running-centric watch with 24\/7 activity tracking for variables like sleep, calories and daily steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hutchinson\u2019s Take<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cWatches that tell you how fast you\u2019re going and how far you\u2019ve gone are a huge blessing, especially on winding and unmeasured trails. But they can also be a curse, if you end up paying so much attention to what the watch is telling you that you stop listening to what your body is saying. You\u2019ll run better if you learn to feel the difference between fast and too fast. I recommend consulting the watch sparingly while you run, but then checking out the data when you get home to look for patterns or insights to compare to your subjective impression of how the run went.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Running Barefoot<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To preface, we do <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mean you should you toss your shoes in the trash and continue your same running routine sans footwear. That\u2019s not a great idea. But as the popular 2011 book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born to Run<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fueled a spicy debate on the matter, we do wonder if it could be one tool in your bag of training techniques. Or perhaps the solution lies in the in-between land of <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/womens-running-shoes\/f\/csh-barefoot\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimalist shoes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-msse\/Citation\/2019\/01000\/Walking_in_Minimalist_Shoes_Is_Effective_for.14.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers have found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help strengthen foot muscles and prevent some injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hutchinson\u2019s Take<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cOne thing I can say for sure is that simply ditching your shoes won\u2019t magically solve all your running problems. Instead, switching to a more minimalist shoe is a tool that can be used for specific goals\u2014for example, helping to shorten your stride and increase your cadence\u2014and it comes with potential benefits and risks. For trail runners, it may be a tool for increasing foot strength and improving balance and stability, but make sure you ease into it gradually.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_74995\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74995\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-74995\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/Shorts_Content_Team_010818_66790.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-74995\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Compression shorts can reduce soreness and fatigue.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>Compression Shorts\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This most classic piece of a runner\u2019s garb\u2014a pair of shorts\u2014gets an upgrade with new materials, comfortable stretchiness and built-in compression shorts aimed at reducing muscle soreness and fatigue. For women triathletes, try the <a href=\"\/product\/128113\/tyr-competitor-tri-shorts-womens\">TYR Competitor Tri Shorts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hutchinson\u2019s Take<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cFinding running shorts that you like is trickier than it sounds. Lately, I\u2019ve had several pairs with an inner lining that\u2019s like compression shorts, instead of the usual looser lining. Some people must love them, because they seem to be popular. I won\u2019t burden you with my tales of chafing, but I can\u2019t run in them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Smiling On the Go<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hear us out. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1469029217303461\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that those who smiled while running saw slightly improved running efficiency compared to those who were instructed to frown. The idea is that facial expressions can impact our level of perceived effort, and thus a smile makes us feel like we aren\u2019t working as hard. If this concept has never crossed your mind, at the very least it\u2019s a free and easy technique to experiment with. Plus, don\u2019t you generally have a better time doing anything while smiling?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hutchinson\u2019s Take<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cEver since Eliud Kipchoge started grinning during Nike\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nike.com\/us\/en_us\/c\/running\/breaking2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking2 marathon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a few years ago, runners have been paying more attention to their facial expressions. Personally, I have a hard time grinning when I run, but I\u2019ve definitely become more aware of how often I run with a grimace of agony plastered on my face. Once I\u2019m aware of it, it\u2019s amazing how much better I feel when I just consciously let my face relax. The moral isn\u2019t necessarily that you have to be grinning like a fool out there, but simply be aware that your facial expression can influence how you feel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_74996\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74996\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-74996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/Hydration_Content_Team_052018_0004.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-74996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running with a hydration pack and smiling? She<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span>s got this figured out.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>Carrying Water With You<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydration vests have become an increasingly popular solution to the problem of how to stay hydrated while on a long run. If you\u2019re running long trails, particularly in remote areas, you need to bring fluid with you. From a physiological perspective, your body doesn\u2019t care whether that fluid comes from a <a href=\"\/c\/running-water-bottles\">handheld bottle<\/a>, a <a href=\"\/c\/running-hydration-packs\">backpack-style hydration pack<\/a> or a <a href=\"\/c\/running-hydration-belts\">bottle belt<\/a>\u2014all that really matters is comfort and capacity. Ever since my wife got me one of these vests a few years ago, I\u2019ve been a convert.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Ice Baths<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice baths can speed up recovery. Or can they do nothing. Or they can\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/1971446\/recovery-ice-bath-isnt-always-such-good-idea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make things worse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/08\/150811103654.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that athletes who take ice baths may have less long-term muscle gain than those who do a more active cool down, like walking or stretching. If there\u2019s a recovery technique that can really split a group down the middle, it\u2019s probably the agonizing ritual of bathing in near-frozen water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hutchinson\u2019s Take<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cIce baths are so painful\u2014and yet many runners swear they leave you feeling so much better the next day. Despite dozens of studies over the years, the research on ice baths is far shakier than you might think. There\u2019s very little evidence that they magically heal your muscles. But as science journalist Christie Aschwanden recently pointed out in her book on the science of recovery, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good to Go<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recovery is also a state of mind.
