Today there are more ways than ever to enjoy America\u2019s fastest-growing watersport, which saw a more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorindustry.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-Topline-Report_FINAL1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 percent increase<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in participation from 2014 to 2016<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are seven novel ways to up your paddle-boarding game, from camping and fishing to going ultralight.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Go SUP camping.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/1-1.jpg?resize=1200%2C800\" alt=\"SUP Camping\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, you\u2019ve been camping, but have you been <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SUP <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">camping? Having a paddle board opens up places hikers and car campers can\u2019t reach for a truly memorable (read: quiet) experience. And with gear advancements in recent years, it\u2019s on the rise, much like the sport itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been seeing bigger boards that you can tie more things to,\u201d says Bryan Thomas, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/destinations.rei.com\/seattle\/meydenbauer-bay-boathouse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REI Boathouse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lead and SUP Outdoor School instructor. These touring-specific boards, like the <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/152841\/nrs-escape-inflatable-stand-up-paddle-board-bundle-116\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NRS Escape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/132424\/pau-hana-endurance-air-inflatable-stand-up-paddle-board-with-paddle-12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pau Hana Endurance Air<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have multiple D-rings and bungee cords to allow paddlers to attach overnight gear and additional meals to the nose and tail. (First, put your gear in a <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/dry-bags\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry bag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/dry-duffel-bags\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry duffle bag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) With the ability to carry more stuff, you can tackle longer or harder-to-reach trips\u2014like camping on the non-permitted side of Arizona\u2019s Antelope Canyon via Lake Powell, which is only accessible by SUP or kayak. (The writer did this exact trip in 2016 and saw approximately zero other campers.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Paddle a river.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73424\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/2-1.jpg?resize=1200%2C899\" alt=\"Paddle a River\" width=\"1200\" height=\"899\" \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mastered the out-and-back lake trip? Time to try a one-way journey. Paddle down a river and discover new sights the whole way. Look for sections of mellow water that match your skill level; ideally walk the section first, looking for rapids and other hazards. Unlike with flatwater, it\u2019s more likely you\u2019ll end up in the water, so consider wearing a <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/wetsuits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; or <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/dry-suits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry suit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, for more difficult or whitewater sections, a <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/paddling-helmets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helmet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly in places like Colorado with lots of rivers and no coastline, river-specific SUP equipment is growing in popularity. Such boards, like the <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/154438\/hala-radito-stand-up-paddle-board-10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hala Radito inflatable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tend to have a swallowtail design for extra stability (great in tighter spaces) and a retractable center fin (great in shallows). River boards are also generally shorter, typically 9 to 10 feet, for increased maneuverability, since reading currents and reacting quickly to obstacles are critical to a successful river paddle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Go greener.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/3-1.jpg?resize=1200%2C802\" alt=\"Go Green\" width=\"1200\" height=\"802\" \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try lessening your environmental impact with a more sustainable stand up paddle board. Founded in 2012 by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablesurf.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Surf<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablesurf.org\/ecoboard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ECOBOARD Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> independently reviews board materials and manufacturing processes and certifies them so that paddlers can easily identify greener boards. SUP brand <\/span><a href=\"\/b\/surftech\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surftech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partnered with <\/span><a href=\"\/b\/prana\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prAna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make boards that boast an ECOBOARD certification that you can find at REI. The collab boards feature deck pads crafted from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bloomfoam.com\/bloom-explained\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BLOOM foam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an algae-based material that helps offset the use of nonrenewable petrochemical ingredients found in most foams.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Use your legs.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/4.jpg?resize=1200%2C800\" alt=\"Go Pedal Boarding\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never miss leg day when you upgrade your rig to a pedal board. Exactly what it sounds like, this board takes the \u201cpaddle\u201d out of SUP, shifting the action from your arms to your legs. The \u201cpaddler\u201d stands on the board and shifts their weight between two pedals while holding a handlebar (like a scooter).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not sure where to start? Go with the original. <a href=\"\/b\/hobie\">Hobie<\/a>, an innovative watersports brand, invented the pedal board in 2016. Wider than your typical paddle board, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirage Eclipse ACX Stand Up Pedal Board<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(available in <a href=\"\/product\/159608\/hobie-mirage-eclipse-acx-stand-up-pedal-board-105\">10.5-<\/a> and <a href=\"\/product\/159609\/hobie-mirage-eclipse-acx-stand-up-pedal-board-12\">12-foot<\/a> options) offers exceptional stability and a smooth ride, making it a great choice for newcomers. You can remove the handlebar and rudder for easy transport, and the fins fold down for navigation in the shallows and hassle-free beach landings. It can also convert back to a classic stand up paddle board (paddle not included) for ultimate versatility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Accessorize.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/5-1.jpg?resize=1200%2C800\" alt=\"Upgrade Your Gear\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019ve mastered beginner paddling, consider upgrading your <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/paddleboard-paddles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paddles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/pfds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c[An ultralight paddle cuts down] the weight you have to move to propel yourself over the course of the day,\u201d Thomas says. Try the <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/138557\/werner-zen-95-2-piece-stand-up-paddle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Werner Zen 95<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which weighs less than 1.5 pounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for PFDs with extra storage, <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/inflatable-pfds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflatable belt styles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lower-profile construction for more mobility and breathability. A good bet: the <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/114943\/nrs-ninja-pfd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NRS Ninja<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Originally designed for freestyle kayakers, this sleek PFD is becoming popular among SUPers for its wide range of motion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>6. Hook a big one.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/6.jpg?resize=1200%2C800\" alt=\"Go Fishing\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quiet and unobtrusive, a SUP can help an angler reach remote fishing holes and keep them stealthy all the while (provided that the paddler has a proper license, of course). Try an inflatable.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73430\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/8.jpg?resize=1200%2C800\" alt=\"Try an Inflatable\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It used to be that hard boards performed better, but <\/span><a href=\"\/c\/paddleboards\/f\/pbs-inflatable\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflatable boards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were easier to store and transport. These days, you don\u2019t have to sacrifice much in the way of performance to cash in on an inflatable\u2019s ease of use. Thanks to improved construction, they\u2019re now more rigid, making them more stable and easier to maneuver on the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflatables are also getting lighter and more compact when deflated, so boards like the <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/150459\/red-paddle-co-compact-inflatable-stand-up-paddle-board-with-paddle-96\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Paddle Co. Compact Inflatable SUP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be carried up to alpine lakes and other foot-accessed bodies of water. (They\u2019re about half the size of \u201cconventional\u201d boards; this one weighs in at around 28 pounds.)
