{"id":71054,"date":"2019-07-22T14:06:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T21:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=71054"},"modified":"2020-05-22T13:03:54","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T20:03:54","slug":"vail-resorts-to-buy-17-more-ski-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/snowsports\/vail-resorts-to-buy-17-more-ski-areas","title":{"rendered":"Vail Resorts to Buy 17 More Ski Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vail Resorts announced on Monday its intent to purchase Peak Resorts, a Missouri-based company that operates 17 ski areas across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting this winter, if you buy a Vail Resorts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epicpass.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epic Pass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll now have access to Vail Resorts\u2019 79 destinations (many of which are owned by Vail Resorts; the rest are affiliated) around the world, including the ski areas formerly owned by Peak Resorts. That includes Vermont\u2019s Mount Snow, New York\u2019s Hunter Mountain; New Hampshire\u2019s Attitash Mountain Resort, Wildcat Mountain and Crotched Mountain; Pennsylvania\u2019s Liberty Mountain Resort, Roundtop Mountain Resort, Whitetail Resort, Jack Frost and Big Boulder; Ohio\u2019s Alpine Valley, Boston Mills, Brandywine and Mad River Mountain; Missouri\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidden Valley and Snow Creek, as well as Paoli Peaks in Indiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71072\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71072\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-71072\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Hunter-Mountain.jpg?resize=1024%2C619\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"619\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-71072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hunter Mountain, in New York, will now be on the Epic Pass. (Courtesy of Hunter Mountain)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last few years have seen<\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/news\/what-vails-new-acquisition-means-for-skiers-and-snowboarders\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major consolidation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the North American ski resort industry, with Vail Resorts adding a growing number of ski resorts to their roster. Add to that<\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/snowsports\/why-you-should-buy-next-years-season-pass-right-now\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alterra Mountain Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founded in 2018,\u00a0which currently operates more than a dozen ski resorts around North America and offers the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikonpass.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ikon Pass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a competing collective pass to Vail Resorts\u2019 Epic Pass.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peak Resorts was the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsaa.org\/press\/industry-stats\/industry-stats-pages\/who-owns-which-mountain-resorts\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second largest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aggregate of ski resorts in the United States, behind Vail Resorts. Plus, it was still growing as of last year. In September 2018, Peak Resorts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peakresorts.com\/news-updates\/snowtime\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bought three ski areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Liberty, Whitetail and Roundtop\u2014from Snow Time, Inc. for a total of $76 million. After this week\u2019s acquisition, which is expected to be completed in fall 2019, Vail Resorts will own 37 ski resorts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what does this mean for skiers and riders? It\u2019s a little early to say, according to Adrienne Saia Isaac, spokesperson for the National Ski Areas Association, the trade organization for the country\u2019s ski areas. \u201cThis acquisition is definitely big news in the ski industry,\u201d Saia Isaac told the Co-op Journal. \u201cHowever, with the announcement just being released, it\u2019s simply too early to tell what impact this will have on the broader industry, and what it will mean for the skiers who frequent Peak Resorts\u2019 ski areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know, for starters, it means more destinations on your collective pass. For skiers and riders based near those Midwestern and Eastern resorts previously owned by Peak Resorts, they\u2019ll now be able to ski their home mountain on an Epic Pass, which starts at $699, and plan trips to world-class spots like Whistler, British Columbia; Park City, Utah; and Vail, Colorado, without having to buy daily lift tickets.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71073\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71073\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-71073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Mountsnow_BrettMiller_PeakResorts_Large.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-71073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mount Snow, in Vermont, has 20 lifts, including this six-passenger bubble chair. (Courtesy of Mount Snow)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take Chris Peterson. He has been skiing and snowboarding at Mount Snow, Vermont, since he was a kid. He and his wife, Christine, live in Connecticut and own a home near the base of Mount Snow, where they spend weekends and holidays with their four children. He says he reacted with both excitement and trepidation at the news that Vail Resorts would be buying his home mountain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m excited for the expanded opportunities to take trips out West. Before this, buying a season\u2019s pass worth of lift tickets for four days of skiing somewhere new for a family of six was very difficult,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cBut will the personal dynamic change for us? Will the intentions for significant investment, which Peaks Resorts had planned to do in lifts and infrastructure, continue under Vail Resorts? We don\u2019t know that yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as Peterson sees it, scale and mergers in the ski resort industry are allowing these resorts to continue to exist and survive. \u201cThe cost of season passes is at an all-time low and the access to resorts is at an all-time high,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cI see that as a very good thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vail Resorts announced on Monday its intent to purchase Peak Resorts, a Missouri-based company that operates 17 ski areas across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.
