His lower lip started to quiver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking fast, I stepped in front of him, hands pressed together at my chest. \u201cYou know what helps when I get upset? Volcano pose!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I lowered into a yoga squat then jumped high, pushing my arms overhead while making loud erupting noises. His whimper turned into a giggle, and he joined in to \u201cexplode&#8221; his own frustration a few times. Meltdown averted, thanks to a creative mind-body movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>More children are practicing mindfulness<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although I\u2019ve practiced and taught yoga and meditation for two decades, I\u2019ve only recently started to realize its benefits for kids. And I\u2019m not the only one: According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/more-than-just-a-game-yoga-for-school-age-children-201601299055\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Health Blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about 3 percent of all children in the United States are involved in mindfulness programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From mat time for moms and babes to high school meditation programs, yoga and meditation for kids is more prevalent than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough it\u2019s exciting to see mindfulness for kids becoming more widespread, the reasons behind the surge are heartbreaking,\u201d says Giselle Shardlow, founder of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidsyogastories.com\/kids-yoga-poses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids Yoga Stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She points out that mindfulness is often used as a remedy for children who are stressed, not sleeping well or don\u2019t exercise enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3980104\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dozens of research studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that mindfulness practices\u2014whether it\u2019s yoga, breathing techniques or meditation\u2014enhance children\u2019s mental and physical health, and also help them cope with stressful situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>\u00a0Yoga helps kids develop self-awareness<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifteen years ago, when Shardlow set out to create yoga-based lesson plans for her students, she couldn\u2019t find any resources. Today, her company\u2019s instructive books and games that help kids learn yoga are distributed in more than 50 countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTeaching children yoga helps them be active, calm and connected with others,\u201d says Shardlow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bidyut Bose, founder of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niroga.org\/\">Niroga Institute,<\/a>\u00a0says yoga can help train kids to recognize their emotions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen the tentacles of toxic stress in our children and in the adults around them, which have serious effects on brain development and behavior,\u201d Bose says.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSure, yoga can help kids feel calm and relaxed. But it\u2019s more powerful than that. The essence of it is generating self-awareness, which has a profound impact on everything we do.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile it doesn\u2019t erase sorrow or anger, practices like yoga give [kids] a way to process feelings in a healthy way,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Huber of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yogakids.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YogaKids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the first yoga-teacher certification programs designed specifically for instructing children.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Schools are integrating yoga and meditation<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26535474\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hundreds of schools across the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are now offering yoga and meditation in classrooms or after-school programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huber recalls that initially most of YogaKids\u2019s clients were yogis interested in broadening their teaching repertoire. Now, the program certifies more educators who want to integrate yoga into their classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChildren learn better by engaging their whole bodies,\u201d says Jess Matthiae, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacefulheartyogamissoula.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peaceful Heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a yoga-inspired preschool and family-centered studio in Montana. \u201cFor instance, yoga improves motor skills and coordination, and also helps develop self-confidence and self-expression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-66444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Yoga-for-Kids_02.gif?resize=1024%2C1024\" alt=\"A mom and her two young children practice one-legged dog pose in a green field with the mountains in the distance\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While research into how school kids may benefit from yoga and meditation is still in its infancy, the early results are promising. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4479898\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2015 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, exposed younger children (average age of 6) to a biweekly school program consisting of 1\u20132 minutes of meditation followed by 6\u201310 yoga poses. Eighty-three percent of the kids said they felt happier, stronger and more relaxed after practicing yoga (side note: their favorite pose was upward-facing dog).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22343481\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2012 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared the anxiety levels of two groups of high schoolers: one participating in traditional physical education classes and the other participating in a yoga program. The PE participants showed worse anxiety at the end of the study, while the yoga participants maintained or improved their moods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in San Francisco, beginning in 2007, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/teacher-network\/2015\/nov\/24\/san-franciscos-toughest-schools-transformed-meditation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several secondary schools chose to lengthen their school day by 30 minutes to include time for meditation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over a four-year period, the schools saw better academic performance and a 79 percent decrease in suspensions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga and meditation may also benefit<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ajot.aota.org\/article.aspx?articleid=1851608\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> children with neurobehavioral disorders like ADHD or Asperger\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22917120\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a 2012 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that daily yoga practice improved classroom behavior among children with autism by improving their concentration and social skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYoga helps educate more than just our children\u2019s brains. It also includes emotional, spiritual and physical learning,\u201d Matthiae explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Tips for yoga and meditation at home<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts like Huber, CEO of YogaKids, say that one of the best ways to introduce children to mindfulness is at home through their most trusted role models: their caregivers. But that doesn\u2019t mean you have to commit to hour-long meditation sessions or become a certified yoga instructor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTeaching grownup yoga to kids doesn\u2019t work,\u201d Huber says. And that\u2019s good news for busy families, since she and other professionals recommend keeping children\u2019s mindfulness practices simple, fun and short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Shardlow, it\u2019s important that adults share yoga and meditation authentically because kids mimic their caregivers. \u201cIf we as adults can find our own magical yoga moments, our excitement and happiness will radiate to our children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She suggests three easy steps to help families get started with a yoga routine:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0First, notice any challenges your children are facing. Target the practice to one specific outcome you\u2019d like to see. If you\u2019d like to transition more calmly to school, you could sit with your child for 3 mindful \u201cbear belly breaths\u201d just before you walk out the door each morning.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Second,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>explore what most interests you and fits your family dynamic. Seated poses before breakfast? Reciting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mother.ly\/parenting\/enable-the-power-of-positive-thinking-by-teaching-kids-affirmations\">positive self-affirmations<\/a> over dinner? Follow-the-leader yoga?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third, pick one technique that interests you (either based upon your own knowledge or the resources listed below), try it out yourself first and then introduce it to your children. This could be as simple as three breaths before bed, sitting quietly for 2 minutes each morning or a few sun salutations together.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-66435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Yoga-for-Kids_01.gif?resize=1024%2C1024\" alt=\"A woman and two young children practice the tree yoga pose in a green field with sunlight shimmering all around them\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>Tips for kids&#8217; yoga in group settings<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it&#8217;s a play date or a yoga session at school, here are a few suggestions for how to introduce kids&#8217; yoga to a group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Turn it into a story, song or game.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read a book or make up your own story to guide the kids through poses: \u201cOnce upon a time, there was a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who ran through a forest and met a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who lived in a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tree<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add movement to traditional children\u2019s songs, such as listening to \u201cYou Are My Sunshine\u201d as the backdrop to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childhood101.com\/yoga-for-kids-sun-salutation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sun salutations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or imitating the animal antics in \u201cDown By The Bay.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be loud and move around in the poses\u2014moo as you arch your back in cow, bark in upward dog, reach for each others\u2019 hands while in warrior stance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrate yoga into a favorite game like freeze tag: When someone is tagged, they have to freeze in a yoga pose and someone else must copy the pose to unfreeze them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play follow-the-leader in a circle where everyone has the chance to make up a pose.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Create a welcoming space.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up in a circle so everyone can see each other. If working with more than 5-6 kids (especially if they are under 6 years old), split up into two circles with at least one adult per circle.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the kids to pick a favorite song as the background music.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use mats, scarves or towels to mark each person\u2019s special spot. For children under 8, you can cut yoga mats in half so they fit smaller bodies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signal the beginning and end of the practice with a bell, drum, chimes or by exhaling \u201com\u201d together.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak in an animated and engaging voice to keep it playful.
