Administered by the National Park Service, there trails form part of the National Trails System (NTS), a network of trails created by the National Trails System Act of 1968.<\/p>\n<h4>National Scenic Trails by the Numbers<\/h4>\n<p>Did you know? National Scenic Trails must: Exceed 100 miles, link superb resources in a continuous corridor for non-motorized recreation and be created via an act of congress. At 14,270 feet, Grays Peak, Colorado, is the highest point of all the National Scenic Trails. That&#8217;s more than 13 Eiffel Towers or 23 Space Needles stacked end to end!<\/p>\n<h4>What to Bring: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/ten-essentials.html\" target=\"_blank\">The 10 Essentials<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Carry this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/h\/camping-and-hiking\">hiking gear<\/a> on every trip to help ensure your safety and comfort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Navigation: Map and Compass<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Topographic maps provide details that are important for route finding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Sun Protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wear sunglasses that block 100% of ultraviolet rays. 30 SPF sunscreen is recommended.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Insulation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conditions can turn wet, windy or chilly in a hurry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. First-Aid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider a pre-assembled first-aid kit. Choose one that suits trip length and group size.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Illumination: Headlamp or Flashlight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Headlamps offer hands-free operation, low weight, compact size and long battery life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Repair Kit and Tools<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Knives and multitools are handy for gear repair, food preparation, first-aid and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Fire: Waterproof Matches, Lighter or Candles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bring reliable waterproof matches made for hiking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Hydration: Extra Water<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carry at least one water bottle and a collapsible water reservoir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Nutrition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bring a day&#8217;s worth of extra food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.
