{"id":46430,"date":"2019-04-12T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=46430"},"modified":"2020-11-02T13:10:08","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T21:10:08","slug":"new-product-spotlight-the-cannondale-habit-5-cannondale-topstone-bikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/cycle\/new-product-spotlight-the-cannondale-habit-5-cannondale-topstone-bikes","title":{"rendered":"New Product Spotlight: The Cannondale Habit 5 &#038; Cannondale Topstone Bikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The network of trails in Washington\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raging River State Forest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are an ongoing labor of love, built by the state\u2019s Department of Natural Resources and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreenmtb.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of Seattle\u2019s most popular mountain biking destinations located 30 miles from downtown, the project started with a 14-mile loop and will eventually become a 40-mile system that leads to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiger Mountain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The evergreen woods are thick. The trails are buffed and flow nicely between groomed berms and bank turns. When the sky is clear, you can see Mount Rainier. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On January 10, when REI sent a group of riders to test and shoot photos of two new bikes from Cannondale\u2014a 29-inch full-suspension mountain bike called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/product\/145802\/cannondale-habit-5-al-29-bike-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habit 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and a gravel bike called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/product\/145825\/cannondale-topstone-disc-se-105-bike-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topstone Disc SE 105<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a windstorm had swept through the forest, blanketing the trails in green debris that had fallen from the conifer trees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/04\/Content_Team_011519_0132.png?resize=1100%2C733\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe entire landscape was covered in green,\u201d said Corey Kelmel, 31, who was riding the Habit 5. Kelmel is a Seattle resident who works in digital marketing, has two dogs, and has been mountain biking his entire life. He is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsandrain.com\/rider110864\/corey-kelmel\/results\/\">an enduro level racer<\/a>, competing in grassroots races in the Northwest. He says the terrain at Raging River was perfect to test out Cannondale\u2019s newest redesigned full-suspension mountain bike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is all flow trail, with really good buff, really good berms, some big-ish jumps in spots, very well-thought out,\u201d said Kelmel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-46434 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/04\/Content_Team_011519_0003.png?resize=1100%2C733\" alt=\"A mountain bike rider catches air off a jump.\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linnea Rooke, 32, a Seattleite who has been mountain biking for six years and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsandrain.com\/rider47448\/linnea-rooke\/results\/\">competes in the pro category for both downhill and enduro<\/a>, was riding the Topstone Disc SE 105 gravel bike and she recalls the many stream crossings she did for the photo shoot: \u201cMy feet were soaked. It was so cold,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you do the stream crossings, you shoot down the bank, cross a stream of marbles, and shoot up the other side. It requires a lot of the bike to handle the marbles and the stream. All of a sudden, you go from dirt to wet, loose, marbly rocks. For the bike to handle that and plow through it all was really awesome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/04\/Content_Team_011519_0097.png?resize=1100%2C825\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"825\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Habit and the Topstone are part of a new offering from <\/span><a href=\"\/b\/cannondale\/f\/pl-habit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannondale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0at REI stores nationwide.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Habit, now with 29-inch wheels, 130 millimeters of travel and Cannondale\u2019s SmartForm C1 alloy frame, is a versatile bike for singletrack riding. It features Cannondale\u2019s new suspension design philosophy, dubbed Proportional Response, which Cannondale says optimizes the bike for riders of all sizes to experience better control and more efficient riding. The Habit 5 is ideal for a person who is just getting into mountain biking, said Kelmel. \u201cThis is a bike that a beginner could buy and have for the next two, three years without changing much, if anything at all.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/04\/Content_Team_011519_0035.png?resize=1100%2C733\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a do-everything bike,\u201d said Kelmel. \u201cIt was really nimble. It was definitely maneuverable. You could slap corners with it, and popping off jumps was more than my bike at home could do.\u201d Kelmel said that his own bike is heavier and more suited for steep terrain and drops that he finds while competing in enduro races. But he was impressed by how well the Habit maneuvered the flow trails at Raging River. He remembers dropping down one trail at top speeds. \u201cAnd I was really surprised for a bike I had never ridden before \u2026 the level of comfort I could ride at that speed,\u201d said Kelmel. One thing that will resonate with bikers, said Kelmel, is the ability to swap components on the Habit and upgrade to parts, if the rider wants to customize the bike. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46437\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/04\/Content_Team_011519_0089.png?resize=1100%2C825\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"825\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joining REI\u2019s lineup of gravel bikes, the Cannondale Topstone is ideal for adventuring on backroads. Rooke, a former cross-country skier who competed in Division 1 races in college, is an avid mountain biker, and she\u2019s used to a bike more suited to singletrack and technical terrain. But the Topstone\u2019s smooth ride and versatility piqued her interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Topstone Disc SE 105 is built to accommodate high-volume tires up to 42 millimeters wide for added comfort and grip. Its geometry is built for endurance, so the rider is in a \u201cconfident and sporty\u201d stance, according to Cannondale.
