It\u2019s an adage as old as dirt, but one that holds particularly true in our outdoor realm. From summits, to fresh powder runs, to that long weekly bike ride, our satisfaction is exponentially richer when shared with others (and yes, there\u2019s even<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/more-and-more-research-shows-friends-are-good-for-your-health\/2016\/05\/26\/f249e754-204d-11e6-9e7f-57890b612299_story.html?utm_term=.df8607d39a8d\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to back it up).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who have built their lives around outdoor pursuits understand this point all too well. For professional climbers, skiers, snowboarders and other outdoor athletes, friends are often planning partners and support systems, in addition to stoke buddies. These relationships help define careers, but they also provide necessary balance in a world that\u2019s constantly pushing toward the next big achievement. After all, there are some sports, like sport climbing, that you simply can\u2019t do alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a shout-out to those who\u2019ve found ultimate friends in the great outdoors, here are some of our favorite partnerships across outdoor sports. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Michelle Parker and Emily Harrington<\/b><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_45513\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45513\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-45513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/Parker_Harrington_OnCotopaxi.jpg?resize=1024%2C731\" alt=\"Emily Harrington and Michelle Parker stand on the summit of Cotopaxi in Ecuador. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Harrington and Michelle Parker on the summit of Cotopaxi in Ecuador. (Photo Courtesy of Michelle Parker)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big-mountain skier Michelle Parker and professional climber and mountaineer Emily Harrington met in their mutual homebase near Lake Tahoe, California, and have forged a bond over long days spent in the mountains together. It doesn\u2019t hurt that Parker likes to climb and that Harrington\u2019s first love was skiing. Cross-training, anyone?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, they attempted to climb and ski 19,347-foot Cotopaxi, a volcano in Ecuador, but they had to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alpenglowexpeditions.com\/blog\/high-points-and-ritter-sports\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turn around<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to weather. In 2018, they returned to Cotopaxi and successfully skied off the summit. (You can follow their shenanigans at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/adventuresofmikeyandharry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#adventuresofmikeyandharry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) Whether they\u2019re hatching plans for a multi-sport weekend in their backyard or planning their next international expedition, their friendship is built on pushing boundaries\u2014something that both Parker and Harrington have focused on in their careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor me, having a female partner like Emily in the mountains is incredibly empowering and without a doubt lifts me up,\u201d Parker said. \u201cWe have bonded over our love of adventure.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harrington says that Parker is one of her favorite mountain partners. \u201cMichelle\u2019s energy and passion are contagious,\u201d Harrington said. \u201cIt is impossible not to laugh and smile around her. When we ski or climb together, she pushes me to be better\u2014just her presence instills confidence. Because of her, I am a better athlete and person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell<\/b><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_45512\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45512\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-45512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/Tommy-Caldwell-and-Alex-Honnold-on-summit-ph_-Sam-Crossley_ReelRockFilmTour.jpg?resize=1024%2C768\" alt=\"Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold in climbing gear on a summit in Yosemite.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold have set first ascents and smashed climbing records together (Photo Credit: Samuel Crossley)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, pro climbers Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell each put out hugely successful climbing films this year\u2014Oscar-winning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/climb\/why-free-solo-transcended-the-climbing-genre\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free Solo<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Honnold and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/climb\/unexpected-joys-drama-from-the-dawn-wall\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn Wall<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Caldwell, both based on multi-year projects on El Capitan in Yosemite\u2014but the pair have been linked well before their forays on the silver screen. In 2014, they notched<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the first ascent of the Fitz Traverse, a seven-peak journey with more than 13,000 feet of climbing across the ridgeline of Cerro Fitz Roy in southern Patagonia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two joined forces in Yosemite last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/climb\/honnold-and-caldwell-crush-the-nose-record\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smashing the speed record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Nose route of El Capitan, sending the 2,900-foot route in 1 hour, 58 minutes and 7 seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Danny Davis and Nick Russell<\/b><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_45511\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45511\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-45511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/NickRussell_DannyDavis_PhotobySethLightcap.jpg?resize=1024%2C576\" alt=\"Danny Davis and Nick Russell walk with their snowboards across a snowy log over a creek.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snowboarders Danny Davis and Nick Russell are roommates and have a big influence on each other&#8217;s snowboarding. (Photo Credit: Seth Lightcap)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The friendship between these two snowboard legends has humble New England beginnings, launching from the frozen halfpipe at Stratton Mountain School in Vermont when they were just 15 years old. Davis and Russell lived in adjacent dorm rooms, and always talked about heading west to snowboard. After graduating high school, that\u2019s where they went. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the pair\u2019s paths deviated there, as Davis exploded into halfpipe superstardom, winning X Games gold in the SuperPipe in 2014 and 2015 and establishing the standard for style in the stunt ditch, while Russell quietly built a successful career as a backcountry snowboarder and mountaineer. Still, they stayed tight. \u201cWatching [Russell] grow into the snowboarder he has become has been a real trip,\u201d said Davis. \u201cNow he\u2019s pushing me into mountains that I would have never touched, or thought to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Recently, Russell has had a big influence on Davis\u2019 riding, bringing the park rider into the backcountry, and even including Davis on the Bolivian high-altitude mission documented in his newest film project, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SscBBaH-ctM\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Range of Mystery<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After living down the hall over a decade ago, the two are now currently roommates in Truckee, California. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Hadley Hammer and Resi Stiegler<\/b><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_45510\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45510\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-45510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/Hadley_Resi2.jpg?resize=1024%2C624\" alt=\"Hadley Hammer and Resi Stiegler hug by a waterfall. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"624\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45510\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hadley Hammer and Resi Stiegler grew up in the mountains together. (Photo Courtesy of Hadley Hammer)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro skiers Hadley Hammer and Resi Stiegler have been friends since they first clicked in to two skis at Snow King Resort and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in their mutual hometown of Jackson, Wyoming, nearly three decades ago. But it\u2019s the places those skis have taken them that makes this friendship really impressive. Hammer grew up Nordic skiing and figure skating and switched to a career in big-mountain skiing and ski mountaineering in her 20s. Stiegler was a ski racer from the start, eventually earning a spot on the U.S. Ski Team and competing in three winter games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, the two keep Jackson close to their hearts, training and freeskiing together in the Tetons whenever schedules align. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resi and I couldn\u2019t be more different in personality (and ski width preference), but we are able to share the same drive to live a life full of adventure, hard work and beautiful mountains,\u201d Hammer said. \u201cAs a result, our friendship has grown despite our travel schedules.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHadley and I have known each other our whole lives,\u201d added <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiegler<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe naturally bonded over the excitement for sunrises on top of chilly peaks and full-moon floats on the river. I would trust anything Hadley puts me through. (Photo Credit: Trevor Brown, Jr.\/ESPN)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Gus Kenworthy came out publicly as the first openly gay pro freeskier in 2015, fellow pro skier Bobby Brown was among the first people he told. Brown, in turn, became a fierce supporter of Kenworthy in the months that followed, advocating for his friend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/9Jd-ScrjWx\/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on social media <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and contributing interviews to publications. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s tough when you have people telling you who to be and how to act in order to keep your job,\u201d Brown <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/story\/_\/id\/13942305\/olympic-freeskier-x-games-star-gus-kenworthy-first-openly-gay-action-sports-athlete\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN The Magazine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2015.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cBut I\u2019ve seen that the people who flourish stick to their guns and are themselves. Those are the people who live the happiest lives and have the most longevity in action sports. But that\u2019s easier said than done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pair have been ski buddies since emerging on the freeski competition scene as teenagers. Brown, from Breckenridge, Colorado, and Kenworthy, of Telluride, Colorado, have nearly a dozen X Games medals between them. They <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have filmed many projects together as well, including a recent film called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/238552159\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roots Lead to Water.<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite busy schedules, they still find time to practice tricks on the trampoline in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/3rUqQSrjUG\/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown\u2019s Denver backyard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Life is better with friends.
