{"id":35525,"date":"2018-06-26T08:39:30","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T15:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=35525"},"modified":"2020-05-22T13:05:46","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T20:05:46","slug":"get-schooled-in-outdoor-product-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/stewardship\/get-schooled-in-outdoor-product-design","title":{"rendered":"Get Schooled in Outdoor Product Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next spring, 33 individuals will become the nation\u2019s first professionals with an<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/opdd.usu.edu\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outdoor Product Design and Development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OPDD) degree from Utah State University\u2014if they don\u2019t get snatched up into the workforce before graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese students are a tremendous addition to the workforce and already so marketable that we\u2019ve lost several [to jobs]. The outdoor industry is ready to hire them. Students can land their dream job,\u201d said Sean Michael, director of the OPDD program at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, a four-year program that launched in spring 2016 and was developed with direct input from outdoor brands. The curriculum is saturated with real-life product scenarios for the next generation of Yvon Chouinards and garage-grown-gear creators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outdoor industry is growing: During a five-year period ending in 2017, the national dollar amount spent on outdoor products grew from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorindustry.org\/press-release\/more-than-play-money-new-report-finds-annual-spending-on-outdoor-recreation-reaches-646-billion-employs-6-1-million\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$121 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorindustry.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/OIA_RecEconomy_FINAL_Single.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$184.5 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Outdoor Industry Association. But in addition to raising the next leaders in the outdoor industry, these college programs are also focusing on one core theme: sustainability. \u201cWe need ethical leaders for the problems that we face as an industry, from waste to toxins to creating products to consumerism,\u201d said Michael. Used and lapsed products like bike helmets and backpacks, Michael says, shouldn\u2019t go to the landfill for ethical, economic or practical reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the OPDD\u2019s sewing and design lab, budding product developers can tinker with textiles, test products and utilize high-end tools like industry-standard sewing machines.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/b\/altra\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the running-shoe company, funded the lab and has ongoing program involvement via the advisory board, design challenges and internship opportunities. Additional outdoor brands have been invited to join as program partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students use 3D printers to create prototypes of belay devices for companies like Black Diamond; develop fleece midlayers with technical fabric from textile companies such as 3M Nextel; or test protective outerwear for high-impact sports like snowmobiling to see how it responds to wear and tear.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35528\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35528\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-35528\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/WesternStateGearRoom.jpg?resize=1024%2C783\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"783\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The student gear room at Western State Colorado University, where an outdoor industry MBA is launching fall 2018. And many of the other programs are focused on sustainability, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn our conference calls with industry leaders, sustainability is repeated over and over. One person said it best: The environment is our golden egg. If we don\u2019t have sustainable products, then we don\u2019t have a business,\u201d said Pete Sherman, dean of the School of Business and director of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.western.edu\/academics\/graduate\/graduate-programs-western\/outdoor-industry-mba\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outdoor Industry MBA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is launching at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado, in September 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-year online degree offers a specialization in either the product or service track. Students complete courses that include immersive experiences at the Outdoor Retailer trade show, adventure networking\u2014the cohort does an outdoor activity like climbing a peak near Gunnison with high-profile outdoor industry leaders\u2014and a capstone project: solving an actual issue within an outdoor industry company.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35529\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35529\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-35529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/MountHenryWesternState.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35529\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Western State students climb Colorado&#8217;s Henry Mountain as part of their curriculum. (Photo Credit: Eric Phillips)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/b\/hydro-flask\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydro Flask<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Oregon State University\u2013Cascades, in Bend, Oregon, is also developing a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osucascades.edu\/news\/hydro-flask-gift-250000-supports-development-outdoor-products-degree-program\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four-year degree program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for outdoor product creation. Geoff Raynak, who was recently hired as the program\u2019s executive director, is tasked with designing the curriculum, which should lift off in fall 2019, contingent on state agency and faculty approval.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are taking the end product and working backward,\u201d said Becky Johnson, vice president of Oregon State University\u2013Cascades. \u201cStudents will have an appreciation for outdoor lands and the places where products are used. The products need to be sustainable and not harm the environment. It\u2019s a lifecycle approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spring 2018, Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, also jumpstarted the country\u2019s first-ever<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/warnercnr.colostate.edu\/hdnr\/adventure-tourism\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adventure Travel Tourism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFour programs is nowhere near enough to serve this industry,\u201d said Michael. But these inaugural degrees will stimulate competition, raise industry standards and enrich the academic community, which is a good start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wish I was 18 years old. Programs like this weren\u2019t even on the radar then,\u201d said Hydro Flask CEO Scott Allan. \u201cThese degrees allow the industry to tap into a talent base that comes out of school ready and able to contribute. An engineer will know how to design a product, but will they understand the ethos of outdoor industry, social responsibility, environmental sustainability, the supply chain and have worked for outdoor companies?
