{"id":34928,"date":"2018-06-08T08:32:05","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T15:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=34928"},"modified":"2020-05-22T13:05:47","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T20:05:47","slug":"the-most-obscure-yet-hotly-contested-ski-world-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/snowsports\/the-most-obscure-yet-hotly-contested-ski-world-record","title":{"rendered":"The Most Obscure Yet Hotly Contested Ski World Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 20, Malene Blikken Hauk\u00f8y, a 26-year-old ultrarunner and member of the Norwegian National Ski Mountaineering Team, and Lars Erik Skjervheim, a 37-year-old Norwegian ultrarunner and ski-mountaineering racer, broke seemingly unheard-of world records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Myrkdalen, the largest ski area in western Norway, Hauk\u00f8y skied 50,656 vertical feet, setting a new women\u2019s record for the most vertical skied in 24 hours. That\u2019s the equivalent of summiting Mount Rainier nearly six times in a day. Skjervheim skied 68,697 vertical feet (equal to over seven Rainiers), looping the same half-mile course and climbing about 1,500 vertical feet per lap 44 times in a day, setting a new men\u2019s record. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34930\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34930\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-34930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/EO_7642.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;After 24 hours, I just wanted to sit down,&#8221; said Malene Blikken Hauk\u00f8y. (Photo Credit: Haakon Funderud Lundkvist\/Dynafit)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an obscure goal, for sure, but it turns out, it\u2019s more sought-after than it seems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2004, Austrian<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/most-vertical-feet-skied-uphill-in-24-hours-(male)\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G\u00fcnter Burgsteiner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> skied uphill 55,812<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feet, then in 2009, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austrian ski-mountaineering racer named<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tetonat.com\/2009\/03\/13\/new-mens-and-womens-ski-climbing-world-records\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ekkehard D\u00f6rschlag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set a new record at 60,350 feet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That year, 2009, American blogger and ski mountaineer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve Romeo <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tetonat.com\/2009\/03\/13\/new-mens-and-womens-ski-climbing-world-records\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote on his site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, TetonAT.com: \u201cI think the record will be pushed even higher in the next few years. How much vertical can the most skilled and fastest rando racers climb on skis in a 24-hour period? My guess is that it\u2019s close to 70,000 for the men and over 50,000 for the women.\u201d Romeo tragically died in an avalanche in 2012, but his estimates were spot on\u2014it would just take nine more years to get there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, a French <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Champion ski-mo racer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> named Florent Perrier attempted to beat the record but fell just short of the 60,000-foot mark. For the last seven years, the record has sat untouched. Until this year, when a 34-year-old ultrarunner from Missoula, Montana, named Mike Foote decided to give it a shot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love doing events that last all day long, but ski-mo races, which I\u2019ve been doing for a few years now, usually only last a couple of hours,\u201d Foote said. \u201cI started to wonder how I could push myself on skis in the same way I push myself in a 100-mile mountain race. I had to do some digging on the internet but I found that others had attempted 24-hour efforts in the past. I thought it would be a fun process to prepare for a record attempt, so I got to work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foote trained for months, logging 10,000- to 15,000-foot days<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Montana backcountry, and in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March 2018, he broke the record, climbing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">61,200 vertical feet in a day on a course at Montana\u2019s Whitefish ski area, with help from a support team. \u201cThe most challenging part was actually the first couple of hours of the attempt, which were particularly hard for me,\u201d Foote said. \u201cI had a lot of doubt and fear in the beginning of the effort and I had to just keep moving early on until I found my rhythm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34931\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34931\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-34931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/GNAM-5924.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike Foote celebrating his 24-hour record in Montana in March. (Photo Credit: Steven Gnam)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two months later came Hauk\u00f8y and Skjervheim from Norway. Skjervheim topped Foote\u2019s record by 7,500 feet. \u201cMy first reaction was, \u2018Dammit!\u2019 and my second reaction was, \u2018And he broke it by so much!\u2019\u201d Foote recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skjervheim said he had been thinking about the record for years, but when he heard of Foote\u2019s success in March, it motivated him to go for it. He started logging long days, scouted a course and lined up friends to support him over the 24-hour mission. When he finished with a new world record, he said, \u201cI almost felt a little bad breaking Mike\u2019s record. I think he did a good job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hauk\u00f8y, who used the same support crew and course as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skjervheim, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crushed the existing women\u2019s record of 34,546 feet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2009\/02\/09\/jackson-woman-sets-record-for-vertical-feet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was set in 2009<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by American writer Dina Mishev while competing at a 24-hour ski race at Colorado\u2019s Sunlight Mountain Resort. \u201cI have always been fascinated by extreme challenges and pushing my body to the limit and things that haven\u2019t been done by many people before,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel mentally stronger than ever, and I got to know my body and mind so well. The days afterward, I felt kind of invincible. If I can do this, I can do anything.\u201d Hauk\u00f8y said she thinks other women will try to beat her record as soon as next year, but she has no plans to attempt this feat again. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34932\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34932\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-34932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/EO_8051-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The sensation when I was finished was overwhelmingly positive,&#8221; said Lars Erik Skjervheim. (Photo Credit: Haakon Funderud Lundkvist\/Dynafit)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why is there suddenly so much interest in this quirky, outlying world record now? \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe it\u2019s a coincidence? Or maybe it\u2019s a sign of the sport growing?\u201d Skjervheim said. Foote agreed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participation is growing and folks are more likely to explore what\u2019s possible on the fringes of the sport. Perhaps it\u2019s just a normal evolution,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After he finished the 24-hour ski course, Skjervheim said he never wants to do that again. It was too painful. But what if someone beats his record\u2014then will he try again? \u201cOf course, I don\u2019t have to do it again, but as the saying goes, you should never say never,\u201d Skjervheim said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what the future brings. If someone breaks it, I may get new motivation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Foote? \u201cWill I attempt another 24-hour record? Phew.
