{"id":34796,"date":"2018-06-05T15:29:09","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T22:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=34796"},"modified":"2021-06-22T09:34:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T16:34:59","slug":"what-vails-new-acquisition-means-for-skiers-and-snowboarders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/news\/what-vails-new-acquisition-means-for-skiers-and-snowboarders","title":{"rendered":"What Vail\u2019s New Acquisition Means for Skiers and Snowboarders"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, Vail Resorts announced they\u2019ll be adding four more ski areas to the company roster: Colorado\u2019s Crested Butte, Washington\u2019s Stevens Pass, Vermont\u2019s Okemo and New Hampshire\u2019s Mount Sunapee will become Vail-owned properties by winter 2018-2019. Once these sales are completed, Vail Resorts will own 17 ski resorts in North America, making it the most dominant player in the North American market with more resorts than any other company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vail will acquire the resorts in two separate deals, purchasing Triple Peaks, LLC, the parent company of Okemo, Mount Sunapee and Crested Butte, for $82 million and Stevens Pass from Ski Resort Holdings, LLC for $67 million. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34807\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34807\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-34807\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/Stevens-Pass_2K9A2515-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C682\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#8217;s one thing that won&#8217;t change at Stevens Pass under new corporate ownership: the view from the top.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the acquisition is big news for skiers and riders deciding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/snowsports\/why-you-should-buy-next-years-season-pass-right-now\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which collective season pass to buy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for next winter, it\u2019s hardly a surprise that Vail continues to expand. The Broomfield, Colorado-based company has been on a spending spree in recent years. In 2014,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.vailresorts.com\/corporate\/vail-resorts-acquires-pcmr.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vail bought Utah\u2019s Park City Mountain Resort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for $182.5 million, in 2016, the company\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.vailresorts.com\/corporate\/vail-resorts-whistler-blackcomb-closing.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purchased Canada\u2019s Whistler-Blackcomb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for $1.06 billion and in 2017, Vail\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.vailresorts.com\/corporate\/vailresorts\/resort-news\/vail-resorts-stowe.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picked up Vermont\u2019s Stowe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for $50 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This comes on the heels of a recent spike in ski-resort consolidation across the industry. In May, Boyne Resorts purchased Utah\u2019s Brighton, New Hampshire\u2019s Loon Mountain, Maine\u2019s Sugarloaf and Sunday River, British Columbia\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cypress Mountain and Washington\u2019s Summit at Snoqualmie<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2017, KSL Capital Partners, which owns Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows in California, and the company that owns Aspen Skiing Company in Colorado merged and bought California\u2019s Mammoth Mountain, Utah\u2019s Deer Valley, Colorado\u2019s Steamboat and Winter Park and six other resorts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 460 operating ski areas in the U.S., four major companies now control about 10 percent of them, according to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsaa.org\/press\/industry-stats\/industry-stats-pages\/who-owns-which-mountain-resorts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the National Ski Areas Association. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor skiers and boarders, this increases competition for new, more innovative and affordable pass products and options to the skiing public, and it will continue to spur investment by competing and nearby ski areas\u2014new lifts lodges and so on will benefit the skiing public,\u201d Kelly Pawlak, president and CEO of the National Ski Areas Association, told the Co-op Journal. \u201cConsolidation still allows the local skier or boarder tremendous options and diversity in their skiing experience and will encourage further investments by other resorts and ski areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re an Epic Pass holder, this could be great news: You can now plan trips to even more world-class destinations without buying additional lift tickets. For the 2018-2019 season, Vail\u2019s Epic Pass, which costs $899<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will offer unlimited access to spots like Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood, Park City, Whistler, Stowe, plus the four new procurements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTogether, the acquisitions of Okemo, Mount Sunapee, Crested Butte and Stevens Pass will significantly enhance the Vail Resorts\u2019 network of resort experiences, adding even more variety and choice for all of our pass holders and guests,\u201d said Rob Katz, CEO of Vail Resorts. \u201cAdditionally, each of these resorts will individually offer guests from around the world entirely new and distinctive experiences in extraordinary locations from coast to coast.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34799\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34799\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-34799\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/Chris_Segal_CBMR_colorfultown.jpg?resize=1024%2C682\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What will Vail&#8217;s purchase mean for locals in towns like Crested Butte? (Photo Credit: Chris Segal\/CBMR)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you live in, say, Leavenworth, Washington, the town closest to Stevens Pass, or Ludlow, Vermont, the town near Okemo, the reactions are mixed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt\u2019s still so early and there are a lot of questions,\u201d said Joel Martinez, general manager of Leavenworth\u2019s Icicle Brewing Company and the former vice president of operations at Stevens Pass until 2015. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be surprised if there are staff changes and new corporate policies. Vail comes in with money and Stevens needs a lot of work and capital investment. Will there be a big wave of people who will travel out here to ski Stevens? Maybe. Or maybe not. Price increases come and that\u2019s a downfall, but now the season pass comes with access to all of these new places.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vail Resorts announced plans to invest $35 million over the next two years in its four new ski areas\u2014so that could bring much-needed capital to improve things like chairlift infrastructure, snowmaking, dining and employee housing. Season pass prices will go down for some\u2014at Okemo, the current cost of a season pass is $1,209, so the $899 Epic Pass will cost less\u2014and increase for others (at Stevens Pass, the current pass price is $699). The Epic Pass will replace existing season passes at the newly acquired resorts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under Vail\u2019s ownership, visitor numbers at places like Stevens Pass and Crested Butte could increase with an influx of Epic Pass holders from all over the country. In 2017, Vail sold a record number of Epic Passes, nearly 700,000, which brings in local tourism dollars but isn\u2019t great for liftlines. \u201cStevens Pass is already at capacity on weekends and the Epic Pass will drive a lot more Puget Sounders here on weekends,\u201d said Lori Vandenbrink, director of sales and marketing at Leavenworth\u2019s Sleeping Lady Resort and a former Stevens Pass employee. \u201cThe expansion that needs to happen in parking, lodges and chairlifts, which I\u2019m sure Vail will eventually improve, will take time. (Photo Credit: Okemo Mountain Resort)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mueller family, which for years has owned Crested Butte, Mount Sunapee and Okemo, some of the last major family-owned ski resorts in the country, sent out a letter on Monday to passholders. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We realize the idea of a large company like Vail Resorts overseeing the operations of our unique resorts may feel unsettling,\u201d the letter read. \u201cHowever, the reality is they are mountain operators and run some of the best and most successful resorts in the industry. \u2026 They will invest in the mountain and our community and they will do so following their company values that are similar to what we have lived by over the years.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Eliza Green, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-owner of Ludlow, Vermont\u2019s Homestyle Hostel and Main and Mountain Bar and Motel and a former <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">competitive halfpipe snowboarder, the news is entirely positive. \u201cWe look forward to the rumored renovation of ski lodges, upgraded lodging facilities and ski and snowboard parks,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greene said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt is my opinion that the Muellers have ensured a bright future for our hometown mountain by selling to a company that has proven itself as one of the best and most successful in the industry.
