Each summer,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3998949\/road-trip-history\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tens of millions<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Americans take to the open road. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Lampoon&#8217;s Vacation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Jack Kerouac\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Road, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or Hunter S. Thompson\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinforce the road trip trip as a popular pastime and a chapter of self exploration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may not have a window of time that\u2019s large enough for a transnational escapade to Canada or Mexico. But across the country, classic routes steer motorists off the beaten path through areas of staggering outdoor beauty. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Oregon&#8217;s Highway 101 and the Hana Highway in Maui, Hawaii, are among the most storied.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Iconic U.S. Road Trips<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are several bedrock road trips that are full of adventure and will carry you through the country\u2019s local culture, solitude and nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina &amp; Virginia<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs from Virginia to North Carolina, consistently ranks among the most-visited national park sites each year\u2014and it&#8217;s easy to see why. Along the Blue Ridge Parkway,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dupontforest.com\/visit\/maps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DuPont Forest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> features a short, easy hike that connects waterfalls, but if you push on farther you can<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dupontforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Kiosk-Map-2018_withWaterFallCorridor_Draft7_optimized.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connect up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to five waterfalls. \u201cThe last two, including Bridal Veil Falls, are easy to get to, quiet and nice. It\u2019s not a hard hike, it\u2019s a longer hiker, so it discourages crowds. Pack extra water and a lunch,\u201d says food and travel writer Jason Frye, author of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Moon-Ridge-Smoky-Mountains-Handbooks\/dp\/1631213911\/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;refRID=EYNN8AN2BG4P0JKY373G\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moon Blue Ridge &amp; Smoky Mountains<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow Frye at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/beardedwriter\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@beardedwriter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Line up your road trip with at least one Friday night in Floyd, Virginia, milepost 165.3. \u201cOne of my favorite towns is Floyd. There are people there who have been in Virginia for generations, weird spots, academia, yurts raising alpacas next to multigenerational houses. These are the people making America great,\u201d says Frye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best stops is the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floydcountrystore.com\/\">Floyd Country Store<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a lunch counter, and simple food like $2 grilled cheese sandwiches and french fries. All of the aisles and shelving are on wheels, which get pushed aside on Friday nights to reveal a dance floor. They pull back a curtain for a stage area for bluegrass and old-time bands. \u201cCloggers, flat footers and square dancers show up for a $5 cover from 7-10:30 p.m. It\u2019s super cool,\u201d says Frye. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also add the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueridgemusiccenter.org\/\"> Blue Ridge Music Center<\/a> (milepost 213), the Southern<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueridgeheritage.com\/attractions-destinations\/moses-cone-manor\"> Highland Craft Guild at Moses Cone Memorial Park<\/a> (milepost 294) and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.altapassorchard.org\/\"> Orchard at Altapass<\/a> (milepost 328).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34526\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34526\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-34526\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/05\/Mabry-Mill-VI-on-the-Blue-Ridge-Parkway-from-Roanoke-to-Ashville_PC-Jimmy-Joe-Flickr.jpg?resize=1024%2C794\" alt=\"The Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway. That said, north of Florence travelers can discover Cape Perpetua and Yachats, which comprise travel writer Judy Jewell\u2019s favorite slice of coast along Highway 101, despite that they\u2019re not totally deserted. Jewell co-authored the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Moon-Coastal-Oregon-Handbooks\/dp\/1631212524\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moon Coastal Oregon<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel guide with W.C. McRae.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/siuslaw\/recarea\/?recid=42265\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cape Perpetua<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a geologic wonder with rocky basalt plateaus, scenic trails, tide pools, churns and spouting horns. Plus, you can pull out your camera at the highest viewpoint accessible by car along the Oregon coast. Refuel at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yachatsbrewing.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yachats Brewery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cool, low-key local spot that excels at fermented beer and pickled vegetables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bandon.com\/old-town\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old Town Bandon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a cute artsy community. South of downtown is a spectacular beach with huge rocks to wander through and birds galore,\u201d says Jewell. Once a month,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandypathbandon.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a labyrinth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is created in the sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farther south, between Gold Beach and Brookings, you can find solitude in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstateparks.org\/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&amp;parkId=56\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Explore all or a portion of the 27-mile Oregon Coast Trail as you soak in 300-year-old Sitka spruce trees, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstateparks.org\/index.cfm?do=main.loadFile&amp;load=_siteFiles%2Fpublications%2FBoardman_Brochure%28lowres%29030235.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Bridges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a collection of seven iconic arched rocks and blowholes\u2014and Arch Rock, an overlook and picnic spot that overlooks a cluster of offshore sea stacks and islands. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstateparks.org\/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&amp;parkId=183\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whale watching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prime off of Depoe Bay and Cape Lookout, near the town of Tillamook. \u201cWhen whales migrate, which is basically spring break and Christmas break, you can hike on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/us\/oregon\/cape-lookout\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cape Lookout Trail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 2.5-mile one-way hike along a little, narrow finger of land that sticks out into the sea. Photo credit: Jonathan Miske, Flickr.<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Hana Highway, Maui, Hawaii<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtohana.com\/sights.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Road to Hana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a 64-mile ping-pong journey along the lush, jungle-esque rain forest coast of Maui and it\u2019s a road trip of a lifetime. Allow a full day to motor from Kahului to Hana and back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grab breakfast in Paia Town, hike at Twin Falls (milepost 2), and stop to gawk at the surfers at Ho\u2019okipa Lookout (milepost 9). Go all the way to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtohana.com\/oheo-gulch.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haleakala National Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hike the \u2018Ohe\u2019o (also known as the Seven Sacred Pools). If the conditions are right, you can swim and hike through the bamboo forest of Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls, which feature a ginormous banyan tree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along the way, stop at a plethora of roadside stands for varieties of banana bread (the Halfway to Hana stand is at milepost 17). Throughout the drive, there are also carts at the end of locals\u2019 driveways, which offer up delicious, moist, classic banana bread: Pay by the honor system. In Hana, do not miss Nutcharee\u2019s Authentic Thai Food. National parks such as Yosemite and Rocky Mountain are beloved for good reason\u2014though the most well-known national parks can begin to look like a theme park \u00a0with chock-full campgrounds and bustling trails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of where we roam,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave No Trace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a list of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/learn\/7-principles\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> everyone can use to ensure the protection of our shared wilderness.
