Dry, rocky, arid mountains fall into the white-sand beaches. It\u2019s like the Mediterranean,\u201d says Linda Nordstrom, senior producer at REI Media Studio, who recently explored Baja on a two-week road trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nordstrom shares a handful of the best roadside attractions, towns, and landscapes along this south-of-the-border route. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Over the Border: Adventures on Highway 1<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjacent to the city of Ensenada is <\/span><b>La Bufadora <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sea geyser, a cave between two huge rocks that loudly expels water more than a hundred feet high when the waves crash upon it.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lookout\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/Ensenada,+Baja+California,+Mexico\/La+Bufadora,+Pen%25C3%25ADnsula+de+Punta+Banda,+B.C.,+Mexico\/@31.7802069,-116.7914994,11z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x80d88ef01f54b9f5:0xf360981bb676a651!2m2!1d-116.5963713!2d31.8667427!1m5!1m1!1s0x83fa5b676039fd79:0x5d61dc44ab9b71a0!2m2!1d-116.7180841!2d31.7265588!3e0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">above the cove<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great viewpoi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nt for the spectacle, or hop in the water and paddle the kayaks. The local fisherman and property owner rents out land for campers. Here, and throughout Mexico, carry cash and plan to pay $5-$10 per camp spot. From abalone to sea urchin, fresh seafood from both oceans is served at Ensenada\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/''\/Mercado+Negro+ensenada\/@31.8615065,-116.6981138,12z\/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x80d89266464d1ea5:0xc2d55e34dfa4425a!2m2!1d-116.6280736!2d31.8615257\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercado Negro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of Mexico\u2019s nationally renowned seafood markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Boojum trees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> belong to the imagination of Dr. Seuss. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/adip.info\/2011\/03\/the-boojum-trees-of-mexicos-baja-california\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural to Mexico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the species can grow 50 feet or higher as its circular stem grows, splits and twists into odd shapes. As you head south, look for patches of the boojum forest on the arid landscape between<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/San+Antonio+de+las+Minas\/El+Rosario,+Baja+California,+Mexico\/@29.756158,-115.1857675,10z\/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x812e4ff6de654a45:0x614ac6a2a5671f85!2m2!1d-114.718889!2d29.732778!1m5!1m1!1s0x8125f358c696807f:0x3542fe8ece21fe88!2m2!1d-115.725753!2d30.059549!3e0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Rosario and San Antonio de las Minas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After ongoing miles of desert, <\/span><b>San Ignacio <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a verdant oasis with flourishing date palms and citrus trees. Light blue and pale yellow buildings speckle town. The intimate plaza is overlooked by a 17th century mission, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ontheroadin.com\/san-ignacio-baja-california-sur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Ignacio de Loyola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has an incredible facade and is built from volcanic rock. If you stay,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ignaciosprings.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignacio Springs<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bed and breakfast sits next to the San Ignacio River, where you can swim, SUP or kayak.<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/San+Ignacio+Lagoon,+Baja+California+Sur,+Mexico\/San+Ignacio,+Baja+California+Sur,+Mexico\/@27.0977889,-113.2005035,10.53z\/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x81356f8ce3d513e9:0x7149fabc59e4018b!2m2!1d-113.1661111!2d26.8783333!1m5!1m1!1s0x813524976ce45255:0x588838162e18a468!2m2!1d-112.8954541!2d27.2820675!3e0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than 40 miles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the south is a whale watching sanctuary,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bajaecotours.com\/map-of-san-ignacio-lagoon.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Ignacio Lagoon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the last and only undeveloped nursery and breeding ground in the world for the Pacific Gray Whale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In under an hour, you can drive from San Ignacio to <\/span><b>volc\u00e1n de las Tres V\u00edrgenes, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is composed of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=341010\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three volcanoes<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">named El Viejo (The Old Man), El Azufre (Sulfur) and La V\u00edrgen (The Virgin). The reserve<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=es&amp;u=https:\/\/www.mexicodesconocido.com.mx\/ascension-al-volcan-de-las-tres-virgenes-baja-california-sur.html&amp;prev=search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> features hiking trails, cave paintings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and hot geysers. Photo credit: Adam Jones, Flickr.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Muleg\u00e9 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><b> Baja <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in rawest form.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/mexico\/baja-california\/mulege\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outdoorsy oasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is dressed with date palms and mangroves, which are nourished by the small river that runs through town. South of the small community are the sandy, white beaches of Bah\u00eda Concepci\u00f3n, including the popular\u2014though, solitary\u2014beaches of El Coyote, El Reques\u00f3n, Concepci\u00f3n and Los Cocos. Retired RV dwellers from the U.S. and Canada post up on the strips for long periods. It\u2019s easy to see why they never want to leave. Grab your provisions\u2014water and food\u2014from the main store in Muleg\u00e9 and camp on the beach. After a long stroll, there\u2019s no shortage of incredible restaurants here. In the city, grab a tasting at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lamiserablelapaz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Miserable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mezcaler\u00eda. Fuel up with to-die-for baked goods and sandwiches at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/docecuarenta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doce Cuarenta Cafe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which boasts a cute patio. Find unbelievably fresh seafood at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Mc-Fisher-123826931001222\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mc-Fisher,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and for a nice dinner out grab a table at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/baja.com\/la-paz\/restaurants\/las-tres-virgenes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Las Tres V\u00edrgenes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Esp\u00edritu Santo Island <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simply can\u2019t be missed. These clear, deep and rich blue waters are a sanctuary for sea life. Kayak, snorkel, SUP, birdwatch, trek\u2014do it all. The island, 16 miles off the coast, is a part of a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1182\/multiple=1&amp;unique_number=1873\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO World Heritage<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">site that comprises 244 islands and coastal areas. Spend more than one night on the island on a secluded beach at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.i-escape.com\/baja-camp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baja Camp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with luxurious tents, warm showers, fresh seafood and chilled cocktails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turn off Highway 1 toward Santiago,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoutbound.com\/mexico\/hiking\/hike-to-the-cascada-sol-de-mayo-waterfall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follow the signs<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the waterfalls to reach <\/span><b>Rancho Ecol\u00f3gico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a rustic lodge owned by<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/RanchoEcologicoSolDeMayo\/about\/?ref=page_internal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Prisciliano<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with an incredible rooftop view of the sunset, candlelit rooms, cold beers and amazing house-made meals. Bonus: Don\u2019s dog leads visitors to the Sol De Mayo waterfall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Todos Santos <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a magical town dotted with art galleries, top-scale restaurants, quiet beaches, rows of textiles and artisan accommodations.
