{"id":33608,"date":"2018-05-11T14:00:22","date_gmt":"2018-05-11T21:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=33608"},"modified":"2018-06-07T14:52:47","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T21:52:47","slug":"hawaii-volcanoes-national-park-closed-due-to-continued-seismic-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/news\/hawaii-volcanoes-national-park-closed-due-to-continued-seismic-activity","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Closed Due to Continued Seismic Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed today, as the threat of a steam-induced explosion and resulting ash fall near the summit of the Kilauea Volcano make traveling in the park dangerous, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/learn\/news\/20180509_pr_advisory.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Park Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said in a news release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The park will remain closed until further notice due to safety concerns caused by a seismic event that began May 1, with small cracks appearing on the volcano, followed by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake May 4 and the opening up of 15 lava fissures (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/magma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">volcanic vents through which magma escapes the surface of the Earth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). On May 4,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/learn\/news\/20180504_pr_closure.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the NPS closed Volcanoes National Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, evacuating about 2,600 visitors. No injuries were reported within the park. At the same time, hundreds of residents remain evacuated from the surrounding community and 26 homes and nine other structures have been destroyed, the Washington Post reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This morning, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/volcanoes\/kilauea\/status.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Geological Survey\u2019s Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released an update that stated that while the 15 fissure vents have ceased erupting, earthquake activity in the area remains high and sulfur dioxide continues to be released from the fissure system.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/volcanoes\/kilauea\/multimedia_webcams.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Webcams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed a steady plume of steam rising from Kilauea Overlook vent, a sign of continued seismic activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geologists predict that steam-driven explosions (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/vsc\/glossary\/phreatic_eruption.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caused when water beneath the ground is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks or volcanic deposits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may occur, making travel dangerous, and rockfalls into the vent could produce low-level ash emissions, which can lead to health complications, especially for those with existing respiratory conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park closure will remain in effect until further notice.
