This isn\u2019t an average high-speed quad, though. The new Doppelmayr chair, which is slated to be installed by next ski season, will fit a whopping eight people and boasts extra-wide, heated seats, auto-locking safety bars and an enclosed plastic bubble to keep storms at bay. This will be the first eight-passenger chairlift in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are excited for our guests to experience the most comfortable &#8230; chair in the world next winter at Big Sky, and to work with the resort team and community to recognize the resort\u2019s full potential\u2014rivaling the best of the Alps and our North American brethren,\u201d Stephen Kircher, president of Boyne Resorts, which owns Big Sky, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Called the Ramcharger 8, the new lift will replace an older, existing chair, and Big Sky estimates the new, higher-capacity lift will reduce lines by around 30 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24728\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24728\" class=\"wp-image-24728 size-article_body\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/03\/19208.jpg?resize=1024%2C576\" alt=\"8-person chairlift\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big Sky&#8217;s new Ramcharger 8 chair will have heated seats. (Photo Credit: Big Sky Resort)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world\u2019s first eight-person chairlift debuted in the late \u201990s in Norway, and they\u2019ve become relatively common in countries like Austria and France. In 2016, more than half a dozen eight-seaters debuted across Europe, including a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leitner-ropeways.com\/en\/company\/news\/bringing-business-class-to-the-slopes\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">super deluxe one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kitzb\u00fchel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Austria, that has slip-proof leather seats inspired by the auto industry. But until now, North American resorts have stuck to six- and four-person high-speed lifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American ski resorts have typically built simple and functional lifts, not necessarily flashy ones packed with features,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Landsman, author of the chairlift news site <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/liftblog.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liftblog.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the supervisor of Jackson Hole\u2019s Sweetwater Gondola. \u201cThere has been significant consolidation of resorts recently, and the first eight-seater [in North America] is a way for Big Sky to stand out in the marketplace.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lift is a perfect fit to move people out of the base area and into popular intermediate terrain. Big Sky rarely has any lift lines and this will keep it that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North America has seen an increase in high-tech lifts and gondolas in recent years. Whistler-Blackcomb\u2019s Peak 2 Peak Gondola, which opened in 2008 in British Columbia, broke records for the longest unsupported span between lift towers, and select gondolas feature a glass floor. The Canyons, now part of Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, built America\u2019s first heated chairlift in 2010, and now you\u2019ll find heated seats at Okemo, Vermont; Sunshine Village, Alberta; and elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vail, Colorado, added a gondola in 2012 with heated seats and free Wi-Fi on your way up the mountain. Aspen Mountain\u2019s Silver Queen Gondola has solar-powered smartphone docking stations to play music. In 2008, Sunday River, in Maine, opened a $7.2 million \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/sponsored.bostonglobe.com\/sunday-river\/chondola\/\">chondola<\/a>,\u201d half chairlift, half gondola, and next winter, Copper Mountain, Colorado, plans to add a similar hybrid lift.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24729\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24729\" class=\"wp-image-24729 size-article_body\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/03\/saunagondoli-maisema2.png?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"Sauna gondola at Sport Resort Yll\u00e4s\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">That wooden gondola? Take Finland\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportresortyllas.com\/en\/ski-resort\/gondola-lift.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sauna gondola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where you can sweat in a sauna as you soar over Finnish Lapland at a ski area called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sport Resort Yll\u00e4s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Klosters-Madrisa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the Swiss Alps, a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e0jpAycYSOk\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six-person chairlift<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> built in 2016 was designed to help those on adaptive mono-skis load the chair by themselves. In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engelberg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Switzerland, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.titlis.ch\/en\/activity\/detail\/titlis-rotair\/4485\/60698\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titlis Rotair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the world\u2019s first revolving cable car, rotates 360 degrees on its way up the mountain to offer panoramic views in every direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what will lift manufacturers think of next? Are 10-person chairlifts in our future?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t think chairlifts will go any larger than eight,\u201d Landsman says. \u201cThere comes a point where the logistics of lining so many people up together and designing a machine so wide become prohibitive.
