Reassessing her life&#8217;s value, Kathy turned to alpinism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided that if I had another opportunity, I wouldn\u2019t waste it,\u201d she said. \u201cDuring the second chemotherapy, I decided to amputate my leg. This night I cried a lot. It pained me to lose a part of my body, but I decided that this was the last day I was going to cry for something I wasn\u2019t going to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On July 28, 2017, Kathy attempted to summit Cayambe\u2013Ecuador&#8217;s third tallest volcano at 18,996 feet\u2013alongside Chad Jukes, a world-class mountaineer and wounded warrior, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rompglobal.org\/\">the Range of Motion Project (ROMP)<\/a>, a nonprofit that provides high-quality prosthetic care in underserved populations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to ROMP, we\u2019ve gathered a group of Ecuadorian and North American amputees to deliver the message that with technology, we can reach mountaintops,\u201d Kathy said.<\/p>\n<p>La Cumbre (The Summit) explores what it means to live as an amputee in the developing world and the power of pursuing things once believed impossible.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21718\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21718\" class=\"wp-image-21718 size-article_body\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/10\/Copy-of-ECUADOR138-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"Kathy Pico running\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stept Studios Director Dana Romanoff and Director of Photography Chris Naum follow Kathy through the streets of Ecuador as she trains for her third attempt to summit Cayambe.
