Its tallest peak, Sa Talaissa, stands at 1,558 feet. Despite its relatively small size, Ibiza is also home to miles of hiking trails that run along beaches and meander through sleepy villages. \u201cIt\u2019s this natural space that makes our island such a special one,\u201d says wellness coach Jose Luis Rodr\u00edguez G\u00f3mez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes called the \u201cWhite Island\u201d for the whitewashed buildings that dot its hillsides, Ibiza\u2019s history dates back to the 7th century B.C. when the Phoenicians settled the capital of Ibiza Town for its optimal location along a popular Mediterranean trade route. Today, ancient structures can still be spotted in Ibiza Town and, along the coast, prairies of delicate Posidonia, or seagrass, wave beneath the ocean\u2019s surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Ibiza has long been associated with all-night parties and a bumping electronic music scene, hiking provides an outlet for both locals and travelers to connect to island\u2019s history and appreciate it biodiversity. Hikers discover new routes through word of mouth, online communities dedicated to celebrating Ibiza\u2019s wild places and commercial groups like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/walkingibiza.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking Ibiza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Grup-de-Coneixement-del-Medi-303909133055430\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grup de Coneixement del Medi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21686\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21686\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-21686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/10\/Toby-Clarke.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toby Clarke, founder of Walking Ibiza<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ra\u00fal Matal\u00ed, founder of the online community <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/eivissapasapas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eivissa Pas a Pas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says he feels free and adventurous when he\u2019s out walking the trails. Even after spending every summer on Ibiza since he was born, he finds new areas he hasn\u2019t encountered before. \u201cYou have to get lost to find the most beautiful spots,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not only tourists who come to hike. Locals also get out on the trails, following leaders like Toby Clarke, who founded the guide service Walking Ibiza after hiking the entire Ibizan coastline with only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20ac1 in his pocket. Others join <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grup de Coneixement del Medi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> founded by Josep Antoni Prats, who leads hikes to help locals more fully enjoy the landscape and connect with the lineage of their homeland. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Marina, a primary school teacher who grew up on Ibiza, it was moving to Barcelona for seven years and returning to the island that allowed her to connect with Ibiza\u2019s natural beauty.
