{"id":20648,"date":"2017-09-20T14:31:52","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T21:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/?p=20648"},"modified":"2023-05-18T17:22:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-19T00:22:49","slug":"5-women-you-should-know-from-the-no-mans-land-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/5-women-you-should-know-from-the-no-mans-land-film-festival","title":{"rendered":"5 Women You Should Know from the No Man&#8217;s Land Film Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"cb-itemprop\" itemprop=\"reviewBody\"><p><b>These women are changing the world of adventure film, outdoor sports and beyond.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This past weekend, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nomanslandfilmfestival.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Man\u2019s Land Film Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took over the small town of Carbondale, Colorado, with three days of films, speakers, workshops, facilitated adventures and even a Sadie Hawkins dance. From writers to athletes to mothers and everything in between, women gathered to find inspiration and connection with other female adventurers. These five stand-out women led the conversation with stories of business acumen, athletic prowess and climate activism.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20659\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20659\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-20659\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/No-Mans-Land-Film-Festival-by-Michelle-Smith-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C675\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No Man&#8217;s Land Film Festival | Photo by Michelle Smith<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Aisha Weinhold<\/h4>\n<p><em>Founder and Director of No Man\u2019s Land Film Festival<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aisha Weinhold grew up watching adventure films and wondering where all the women were. In 2015, she started No Man\u2019s Land Film Festival to bring together women and change how adventurers are represented on screen. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20651\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20651\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-20651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/Aisha-Weinhold-by-Cooper-Puckett.jpg?resize=1024%2C659\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"659\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Cooper Puckett<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three years, later the festival has grown from a local event to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nomanslandfilmfestival.org\/tour-calendar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a national film tour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Weinhold&#8217;s approach to creating the film festival\u2014and, ultimately, sparking change within the outdoor community\u2014relies heavily on\u00a0the principle of show, don\u2019t tell. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile we do have a handful of films that bluntly speak to feminism and sexism, the majority do not. We just put people in front of a screen with a bunch of women doing incredible things,&#8221; she said. &#8220;In my mind, this is where I want the world to go: where you can see a film with a woman totally crushing it and it\u2019s normal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Lael Wilcox<\/h4>\n<p><em>Endurance bikepacker, FKT holder on the Trans Am Bike Race, Tour Divide and Baja Divide Trails<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lael Wilcox is a force to be reckoned with. In the last year alone she\u2019s co-created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bajadivide.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long distance bikepacking route<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, set the trail\u2019s fastest known record, started a mentoring non-profit and even starred in the REI short film \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/video\/rei-presents-fast-forward\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Forward<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d That\u2019s probably why Weinhold physically traveled to Wilcox\u2019s bike shop in Alaska to ask her to join the festival. For Wilcox it was a no-brainer. \u201cIt\u2019s about community and directly trying to inspire people to get out there by being passionate myself and then inviting them along,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20652\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20652\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-20652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/Lael-Wilcox-by-RNicholas-Carman1-6047.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by R. Nicholas Carman<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilcox not only worked to create the 1,700-mile-long Baja Divide Trail but she also annually awards a scholarship to support a woman in riding the trail. Back in Anchorage, her non-profit,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anchoragegrit.wordpress.com\/\">Girls Riding Into Tomorrow<\/a>\u00a0(GRIT), strives to mentor middle school girls in cycling. Currently, she\u2019s riding all of the major roads in Alaska and gearing up for another round of scholarships this fall. How to land Wilcox\u2019s Globe of Adventure scholarship? \u201cI look for positivity, someone who could be an inspiration for others, too,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Dr. Jane Zelikova<\/h4>\n<p><em>Environmental activist, tropical ecologist<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Jane Zelikova, completing her PhD, being published in scientific journals, earning major grants and working for the U.S. Department of Energy just weren\u2019t enough.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI could tell that my science wasn\u2019t getting out in a way that really made an impact,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20654\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20654\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-20654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/Jane-Fishing-by-Morgan-Heim.jpg?resize=1024%2C683\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Morgan Heim<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, Zelikova joined forces with filmmaker Morgan Heim to create &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.endofsnow.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The End of Snow,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a three-part film series exploring climate change through the lens of shifting snowpacks. Her strategy worked. The film has been viewed millions of times, featured in major publications and screened at film festivals across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was uncomfortable being the center of the film, but now is the time to get out there and be vulnerable,&#8221; said Zelikova. &#8220;I believe scientists can be connectors between the various silos in the environmental movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Sarah Tingey<\/h4>\n<p><em>Businesswoman and adventure paddler <\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Alpacka Raft was first started by Sheri Tingey, Sarah (her future daughter-in-law) helped out by sewing materials. But Sarah left to follow a career in environmental consulting and moved to Portland, Oregon. A few years ago, Sarah returned to Alpacka Raft\u2014this time as the outreach and operations director, responsible for managing the company&#8217;s structures, production and distribution. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/packrafting-basics.html\">packrafting<\/a> world that\u2019s predominantly male, Alpacka Raft is unique in that it was founded by a woman and is now run by a largely female staff. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20655\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20655\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-20655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/Sarah-Tingey-2-by-Thor-tingey-Brooks-Range.jpg?resize=1024%2C684\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Thor Tingey, Brooks Range<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah recruits women, aims to hire many of them into leadership positions and makes sure they\u2019re active across the company, including in customer service. \u201cIt\u2019s subtle,&#8221; she said. &#8220;When people call they hear a female voice. We\u2019re making sure it\u2019s not just men in the space.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also organizes women-specific trips and training\u00a0and requires that if Alpacka Raft is a sponsor of an event, there\u2019s equal prizing for men and women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personally, she\u2019s continuously pushing her personal comfort zone on the water. This past year, she became one of the first women to pack raft down the Grand Canyon self-supported. \u201cPackrafting as a sport is very male-dominated,&#8221; said Sarah. &#8220;It\u2019s been fun to watch the women\u2019s packrafting community blossom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Madaleine Sorkin<\/h4>\n<p><em>Professional climber, guide and coach<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last August, Madaleine Sorkin claimed a First Female Ascent on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainproject.com\/v\/the-honeymoon-is-over\/110886709\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honeymoon is Over<\/span><\/a>, a route<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on The Diamond of Longs Peak, the sheer east face of the iconic mountain. Rated at 5.13c and topping out at\u00a0above 13,000 feet, the send was not only a testament to Sorkin&#8217;s skills as a climber but also her grit in the face of inclement weather and dizzyingly thin air.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20657\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20657\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-20657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/DSC02467_SMALL.jpg?resize=1024%2C576\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Henna Taylor<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorkin, a climbing guide and coach based in Boulder, Colorado, had tried and failed at the route before, a struggle captured in the film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s1SNvmV8oiw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honeymoon is Over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Henna Taylor. &#8220;There\u2019s a lot more we can talk about besides the send, the achievement,&#8221; said Taylor. &#8220;We need to acknowledge the achievement but also dig deep into the human experience.
