Since 1970, some form of LGBTQ+ Pride has been celebrated in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall uprising<\/a>, a rebellion against state-sanctioned discrimination and intimidation in response to a police raid at storied New York gay bar the Stonewall Inn. While Stonewall patrons endured frequent raids\u2014many of which resulted in arrests for violating laws against \u201ccross-dressing\u201d\u2014the crowd spontaneously resisted that summer night, sparking a movement that demands equal human and civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the beginning, honoring the uprising\u2019s anniversary has been about celebrating queerness and continuing the fight for freedom from discrimination and systemic oppression. For some, the month is an opportunity to revel in the LGBTQ+ community\u2019s diversity, beauty, creativity, resilience and love. For others, however, it can be a more somber moment, a call to action to remember that there’s still work to do to ensure all people have equal protection, equal opportunities, and the freedom to live and love authentically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), there are currently more than 585 anti-LGBTQ+ bills<\/a> introduced on the state and federal level, including actions restricting transgender athletes in sports, removing certain books and curriculum from schools, and even challenging the right to same-sex marriage. Additionally, political pressure has resulted in widespread erasure of LGBTQ+ identities from governmental entities\u2014including removing mention of transgender individuals or influence from the National Park Service website for the Stonewall National Monument<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At REI Co-op, we believe that the outdoors is for all, and we\u2019re on a mission to get everybody outside<\/a>. That means ensuring all people\u2014including LGBTQ+ community members\u2014feel welcome, represented, heard and honored in outdoor recreation spaces and on our public lands. This year, we wanted to acknowledge the complexities that Pride month brings for members of the co-op\u2019s LGBTQ+ community by inviting REI Co-op Members, staff and partners to share what Pride 2025 means to them in their own words. Read their thoughts below, and we hope that no matter what this Pride month means to you that you\u2019re able to get outside freely, joyfully, lovingly, authentically and proudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
