I\u2019ve lived in Los Angeles for six years. During that time, I\u2019ve frequently traveled back and forth to my hometown of Seattle, Washington.&nbsp;While a plane ride between LA and Seattle can take less time than driving across LA in rush-hour traffic, the transition of environments and climate can be physically jarring. I didn\u2019t want to blink and go from palm trees to evergreens. I craved an adventure at a slower pace. The antidote: a road trip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite growing up in Washington, I never traveled down state Route 1, known for its scenic coastline. (The route is often referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway.) So when my friend Amy Enser, a camping expert and video producer for REI Co-op, invited me on a road trip down state Route 1 in July, I said yes. As a kid, my family liked to camp. (REI member since 1991.) But as an adult, I was limited by my lack of gear and knowledge. Amy provided the foundation for our journey by planning the route and bringing most of the gear. Still, we had some special considerations. We had to accommodate two adults and two dogs (one of which we&#8217;d be picking up at the end of the trip) in a van with bare-bones amenities. Not to mention, we were traveling during a peak time of year for vacationers and anticipated needing to make last-minute changes to our plans and route. How would that all work? The answer was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/camp\/find-your-next-adventure-with-hipcamp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hipcamp<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hipcamp is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj3_Lua_-iHAxWIEDQIHSI3KlsQFnoECAsQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hipcamp.com%2Fen-US&amp;usg=AOvVaw30mz3IUiUQVyxVN4Ujt3Lc&amp;opi=89978449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online site<\/a> and app that enables people to discover unique places to stay on private and public land and, in some cases, find real-time availability. With Hipcamp, the anxiety of finding a place to camp along our route evaporated. Last-minute changes and detours? We easily found same-day spots. Dog-friendly locations that also had toilets? Camping with pups was easy thanks to Hipcamp&#8217;s canine-friendly search settings. Campgrounds with epic views and local flavor? The myriad options offered a choose-your-own experience, with everything from remote and rustic campsites to communal glamping. We awoke to lush greenery and solitude in the woods of the private property. Despite seeing a couple other campers in the area, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hipcamp.com\/en-US\/land\/washington-naked-falls-3xryhmxm?share_id=1jneu7b1hv6&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_source=share_content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Hipcamp site<\/a> felt secluded. Like me, Amy&#8217;s dog Ray was also on his first road trip, and he brought all the excitement and support for the journey. We ended our day at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hipcamp.com\/en-US\/land\/oregon-trans-cascadia-excursions-zwjhl2yr?share_id=qngu2sel9x&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_source=share_content&amp;adults=1&amp;children=0&amp;srid=7b902bae-7e89-495d-8ef2-a15595c98ca3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beautiful glamping site<\/a> next to a riverside geodesic dome on the hosts&#8217; private property (we camped in our van, but the dome and rushing water provided a beautiful backdrop). This site offered plush amenities like a dry sauna and an outdoor bathroom with a bidet and rainfall shower. It was quite the transition from the outhouse we had at our last campsite. The curated location was thoughtfully designed by our hosts, who welcomed us like guests into their home and even helped us back our van into their site. We wished we could have stayed even longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>Day 3: Shady Cove, Oregon<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/08\/2024-08-05-RoadTrip-Day3-InCopy-01.jpg?resize=1024%2C580\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-197028\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeClickedV2 CommentHighlightClicked CommentImportant SCXW14142254 BCX8\">The host at our next <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClicked CommentImportant SCXW14142254 BCX8\">Hipcamp<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClicked CommentImportant SCXW14142254 BCX8\"> location had to cancel at the last minute due to an emergency<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightPipeClickedV2 SCXW14142254 BCX8\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">so <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">we <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">stayed<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">in<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW14142254 BCX8\">Westfir<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\"> a little longer t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">o access <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW14142254 BCX8\">Wi-Fi<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\"> and find an alternative<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\"> location for the night.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\"> But this is the great thing about Hipcamp: When plans change, you can pivot.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">Using the app, we<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">found a<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">spot <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">bout <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRestV2 CommentHighlightRest CommentImportant SCXW14142254 BCX8\">t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest CommentImportant SCXW14142254 BCX8\">hree<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest CommentImportant SCXW14142254 BCX8\">hours<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightPipeRestV2 SCXW14142254 BCX8\">away in<\/span> S<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">outhern<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\"> Oregon where we could set up our tent for the night<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW14142254 BCX8\"> Our campsite sat on a remote 200 acres of land with stunning views of <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount Thielsen. Our first order of business: visiting the Redwood National and State Parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. Walking into the forest felt like stepping back&nbsp;in time\u2014the giant redwood trees can live up to 2,000 years. Seeing them was emotional and humbling. Their immensity&nbsp;left me speechless, and my heart was full of gratitude for experiencing this with Amy and Ray. We continued to immerse ourselves in the landscape at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hipcamp.com\/en-US\/land\/california-whispering-redwood-creek-wz6h5qvd\/sites\/957584?siteId=957584&amp;share_id=1dnctma92sz&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_source=share_content&amp;adults=1&amp;children=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hipcamp site<\/a>, on a private patch of property nestled on a mountainside among redwood trees. After a day of driving, our next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hipcamp.com\/en-US\/land\/california-forest-ocean-retreat-9mxhwnd9\/sites\/718712?siteId=718712&amp;share_id=50feg3z3on&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_source=share_content&amp;adults=1&amp;children=0\">Hipcamp stay<\/a><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW255913869 BCX8\">\u00a0wa<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW255913869 BCX8\">s in Mendocino County. This location <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW255913869 BCX8\">didn\u2019t<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW255913869 BCX8\">disappoint.
