How many pairs of socks do you need? Should you pack trekking poles? What goes in your carry-on? And, how do you keep your passport safe?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We sat down with two experts to bring you top tips from their years of travel experience.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:51px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Keep important documents safe. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your passport, driver\u2019s license and travel insurance on your person at all times. (If you\u2019re going on an adventure travel trip, consider purchasing emergency medical and evacuation coverage.) It\u2019s also a good idea to scan those documents, save them to your phone and email them to yourself and your contacts at home. Save other important documents\u2014like reservations and itineraries\u2014as photos that you can access via your phone or create an email folder you can access from any location. \u201cIf you\u2019re traveling internationally, also have a physical copy of your passport and pack it separately so you can go to the closest embassy and show it to get help faster,\u201d said travel guide Belinda Gardner.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Lighter is better with adventure travel.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/Content_Team_041417_19619-e1666143695615.jpg?w=1024&#038;resize=1024%2C614\" alt=\"Travelers by a train\" class=\"wp-image-20265\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re touring by bike or exploring multiple destinations, you \u201cmay be moving every night, so you don\u2019t want to have a ton of stuff. Keep your luggage light and small,\u201d guide Janel Jensen said. Don\u2019t know where to start? Be smart about your carry-on.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belinda always carries a warm layer, a spare toiletry kit, medications, clean socks and underwear in a <a href=\"\/c\/day-packs\">daypack<\/a>. She wears her hiking boots and straps her cycling shoes and helmet to the outside of her carry-on (the combo doubles as a great conversation starter), so she\u2019s ready for day one of her adventures, even if the airline loses her luggage.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Go with <a href=\"\/c\/clothing\/f\/f-quick-drying\">quick-dry clothing<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou want clothes that you can hand wash and dry overnight on a towel rack,\u201d said Janel. <a href=\"\/s\/synthetic-hiking-and-travel-pants\">Synthetic pants<\/a> and <a href=\"\/s\/synthetic-hiking-and-travel-shirts\">shirts<\/a> not only pack small but also wick sweat and dry in a flash after washing. Be extra prepared by bringing detergent along, too. We love the Sea To Summit <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/204668\/sea-to-summit-trek-travel-laundry-wash-33-fl-oz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trek and Travel (liquid)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/785917\/sea-to-summit-pocket-laundry-wash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pocket (mini-sheets)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> laundry wash, which are both TSA carry-on compliant.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Fewer clothes are better. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janel brings three pairs of clothes\u2014a mix of trekking pants and shorts and long-sleeve and short-sleeve shirts, and usually one dress, too. \u201cPeople get so worried about wearing the same clothes over and over again\u2014but no one is paying attention,\u201d said Belinda. Remember what you\u2019re there for, and think and pack like a backpacker.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Pack small. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experts were split on the age-old debate on whether to roll clothes or fold them. Proponents of rolling say rolled clothes take up less space and you can see all of your stuff at a glance. Those who fold say flatter clothes are more easily packed. Both proponents of rolling and folding recommend&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"\/product\/896742\/eagle-creek-pack-it-original-full-cube-set\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eagle Creek packing cubes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These colorful cubes separate your underwear from your toiletries to keep you organized on long excursions. Remember to fill every inch of available space in your luggage. \u201cI always have a hat and it\u2019s upside-down in the center of the bag with clothes stuffed inside. It seems to keep its form well that way,\u201d said Ashlee Langholz, program manager for content at REI, and avid adventure traveler.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Use <a href=\"\/c\/duffel-bags\">a duffel bag<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/Skrobecki_061619_0013.jpg?resize=1024%2C682\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183269\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Duffels are better than hard-case luggage because they are soft,&#8221; said Janel. It&#8217;s true: Whether playing luggage Tetris in the trunk of a taxi or on the backs of pack animals, duffels have a leg up on hard-sided bags. Simply put, duffels with straps make rushing through the terminal or running for the bus easier, not to mention the fact that they&#8217;re durable and smashable\u2014a necessity when it comes to adventure travel. Plus, \u201cI feel like I\u2019m training when I walk through airports,\u201d said Ashlee.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Double up on <a href=\"\/c\/socks\">socks<\/a>. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re the one thing that barely takes up any room. \u201cI don\u2019t skimp on socks. I don\u2019t mess around with them,\u201d said Janel. Don&#8217;t forget to stash away a pair of \u201csacred socks.\u201d That&#8217;s the pair you save to wear when everything else is soaking wet or ruined.<\/span><\/strong> For a few recommendations, read our <a href=\"\/learn\/expert-advice\/the-best-hiking-socks.html\">Best Hiking Socks guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. BYOWB (Bring Your Own Water Bottles).&nbsp;<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you can\u2019t carry water in <a href=\"\/c\/water-bottles\">water bottles<\/a> through TSA, you can fill up your bottles on the other side. It\u2019s one way to be more eco-friendly during your travels, even as your carbon footprint expands with each plane ride. We are all about the <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/116364\/katadyn-befree-collapsible-water-filter-bottle-338-fl-oz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katadyn BeFree Collapsible Water Filter Bottle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it collapses into next to nothing and filters water as you drink.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. Be prepared for rain.&nbsp;<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/Lebel_091911_0266.jpg?resize=1024%2C682\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183273\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Hiking in Ireland.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, be prepared for any weather. Think like a backpacker and bring <a href=\"\/c\/rain-jackets\">a rain jacket<\/a>\u2014and depending on the climate, <a href=\"\/c\/rain-pants\">rain pants<\/a> and a pack cover, too. After all, \u201cwhen you\u2019re on an adventure travel tip, you\u2019re going to hike regardless of the weather,\u201d Janel said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs long as you have your passport, clean <a href=\"\/c\/underwear\">underwear<\/a> and a sense of adventure, you\u2019re good to go.\u201d \u2013 Belinda&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardner, REI Adventures program manager<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>11. Always have your <a href=\"\/learn\/expert-advice\/ten-essentials.html\">Ten Essentials<\/a>. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have the <\/span><a href=\"\/b\/rei-co-op\/c\/packing-cubes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that I keep my Ten Essentials in. It goes with me everywhere, and I often travel with it if I\u2019ll be doing anything active on the trip,&#8221; said Ashlee. &#8220;And remember to take out your multi-tool if you\u2019re not checking the bag!\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12. Bring your own over-the-counter medications.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re on a guided expedition, your guides will have plenty of group first-aid options. Even so, having your own tried-and-true blister kit, hydrocortisone, antibiotic ointment and allergy pills is important. Be sure to bring extra prescription meds in your carry-on, too. There\u2019s no guarantee you\u2019ll be able to get your hands on certain essentials in far-flung places. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"682\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/09\/Adventure-Travel_02.jpg?resize=1024%2C682\" alt=\"Two eager travelers, studying a map\" class=\"wp-image-42300\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13. <b>Take a <\/b><a href=\"\/c\/bandanas\"><b>bandana<\/b><\/a><b> or <\/b><a href=\"\/b\/buff\"><b>Buff<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is probably one of the most versatile items you can pack\u2014you can use it for dust, sweat, stopping runny noses, finding new hairstyles and simply making a fashion statement. And, if you\u2019re in the backcountry, pack two and you\u2019ll have a pee rag, too.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>14. Don\u2019t forget your light source. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janel uses her phone\u2019s flashlight in dimly-lit shared spaces, so as not to bother her roommates. Places vary, she says, like \u201cin Nepal where they regulate their light. Sometimes you&#8217;re caught without electricity for hours on end, and you\u2019ll need a light source,\u201d or you\u2019ll be stuck in the dark. We recommend a small rechargeable headlamp like the ones from <a href=\"\/product\/124323\/fenix-hl60r-rechargeable-headlamp\">Biolite<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>15.&nbsp;<\/strong><b>Locks can be a theft deterrent. <\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they\u2019re not theft-proof. If you\u2019re going to put a lock on your duffel or luggage, invest in a TSA-compliant lock like the <a href=\"\/product\/129495\/pacsafe-prosafe-800-tsa-accepted-3-dial-cable-lock\">Pacsafe Prosafe 800<\/a> so airport staff can access your checked luggage without having to damage your bag. As always, don\u2019t pack anything valuable\u2014keep it on your person instead.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>16. Ask your airline for backpack protection.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re only flying with a backpack, make sure to protect the straps by cinching them tight and wrapping your hipbelt around the back of your pack. Then pack the whole thing in a large duffel or plastic bag, which most airlines can provide.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>17. Check your <a href=\"\/c\/trekking-poles\">trekking poles<\/a>. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/Lebel_091611_0381.jpg?resize=1024%2C682\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183275\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an age-old question: carry-on or check? Although we\u2019ve heard tales of carrying them on, most airlines require you to check them because they do have a pointed tip. \u201cI love my <\/span><a href=\"\/product\/113210\/leki-micro-vario-carbon-lady-trekking-poles-pair-womens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leki trekking poles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that weigh nothing and fold up. Just be sure to make sure they fit in your suitcase,\u201d Belinda said. To protect your duffel, use the trekking poles\u2019 tip protectors, and to protect them from bending or breaking, pack them close to something substantial, like your daypack.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>18. Keep your lesser-used items at the bottom of your duffel.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stack the bottom of your duffel with heavy items you aren\u2019t planning on accessing right away\u2014think extra shoes, rain pants, crampons and a daypack. And, what are you using right away? Pack toiletries right on the top, so you\u2019re not digging through your pack if you get to your destination late at night.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>19. <b>Double-check TSA regulations before you pack.<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is your <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/whatcanibring\/all\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full resource<\/span><\/a> for TSA regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>20. What gear should you bring and what should you rent? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/Parrish_041112_0835.jpg?resize=1024%2C682\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183271\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Biking in Europe.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belinda has this down to a science. If she\u2019s spending a day or two doing a sport, she\u2019ll rent everything she needs when she gets to her destination. If she\u2019s there for a longer tour, she\u2019ll bring the most important gear she needs for each activity:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cycling:<\/strong> Pack your helmet, shoes, gloves and saddle. Leave your bike at home\u2014you can rent really nice bikes and try out a new brand in a different country. Plus, you\u2019ll save yourself the cost and hassle of taking your bike apart, flying it there and putting it back together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Backpacking: <\/strong>Pack your boots, sleeping bag and backpack. You can rent pads, tents and trekking poles from most guiding companies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mountaineering: <\/strong>Pack your boots and harness. Your guide can provide the rest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watersports: <\/strong>Pack your favorite mask and snorkel\u2014because if you\u2019re in Baja California swimming with sea lion pups, you\u2019ll really want a good fit. Rent the wetsuit, paddles, PFDs and boats at your destination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yoga: <\/strong>Pack your mat and towel. It might take up some space in your bag, but being comfortable is worth it.
