There were lingering feelings of loneliness, regret and anxiety, and depressing thoughts. Though he wasn\u2019t diagnosed with a mental health disorder, he says most other veterans he knows felt the same way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMentally, transitioning from the military back to the civilian sector was one of the most challenging journeys I\u2019ve undertaken,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In response<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Knode<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0turned to the outdoors. Though no official outdoor programming was offered to him when he left the Army, he found his time in nature\u2014both alone, and with fellow veterans\u2014to be calming and grounding.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn a lot of ways, making a successful transition from war to civilian life is a lot like climbing a very challenging mountain,\u201d Knode, who is now 35, says. \u201cWhenever I have felt overwhelmed in life or feel off track, taking a trip into the mountains allows me to reflect and process.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Knode isn\u2019t alone in seeking solace in the outdoors, and a new bill could make it easier for veterans <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seeking medical treatment and therapy outside<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he Senate today unanimously passed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the Accelerating Veterans Recovery Outdoors Act, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/senate-bill\/1263\">S.1263<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which establishes an interagency task force, calling on members of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of the Interior, among others, to make recommendations about how the outdoors can be used as preventative care, medical treatment and therapy for veterans. Advocates hope the bill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which passed out of the House of Representatives on Sept. 23,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will encourage federal agencies to reduce barriers to veterans seeking to use public lands for medical care and other health benefits.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In May 2019, Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Adam Smith (D-WA) introduced the House version of the bill, and a bipartisan pair of Senators\u2014Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Steve Daines (R-MT)\u2014introduced the companion bill. In the intervening months, more than 150 members of Congress from both parties signed on to sponsor the legislation.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cVeteran assistance groups agree that access to nature, combined with other treatments like group activities, have positive therapeutic effects on veterans<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0especially those struggling with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">combat-related injuries or post-traumatic stress<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Chris Smith and Adam Smith said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adamsmith.house.gov\/press-releases?ID=1EF228DB-396E-40CE-9B8C-A44A7DBC3B68\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">joint statement in September<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">REI also played a role by partnering with members of Congress to help draft and advance the bill through the legislative process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating more opportunities for veterans to use public lands to heal and recover simply makes sense,&#8221; REI CEO Eric Artz said in September. &#8220;I believe in the healing power of the outdoors, and we should be doing everything we can to make time outside easier for fellow veterans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There were more than<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 20 million veterans living <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the U.S. in 2016, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2017\/11\/10\/the-changing-face-of-americas-veteran-population\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PEW researc<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2017\/11\/10\/the-changing-face-of-americas-veteran-population\/\">h<\/a>. When it comes to reentry to civilian life, veterans like\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Knode<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> can struggle with settling on a new career path or finding a close-knit group to stand in for the closeness of the military experience, according to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">New<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Directions for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Veterans<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">os Angeles<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">based nonprofit that offers social services to veterans. Some also <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">return<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with the lingering physical and psychological effects of traumatic war experiences, which can take the form of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ost<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">raumatic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tress\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">isorder (PTSD), depression, substance use and abuse, and beyond.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maddy Toft, 48, is a merchandising operations manager for REI and a veteran who served as an Army captain and pilot from 1994 to 2002. \u201cToo often, veterans come back and get shoved into a crowded hospital to undergo physical or mental therapy,\u201d she says. \u201cBut sometimes the best and simplest thing you can do is to get out and walk in the fresh air, so you\u2019re not surrounded by what reminds you of your suffering.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Time in nature has been shown to help people of varying backgrounds with mental health issues by reducing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep28551\">depression<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17055544\">anxiety<\/a> and increasing overall <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4157607\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">happiness<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. For veterans, in particular, time outside appears to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5193293\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">decrease symptoms of PTSD<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and may help former service members\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2018-27538-001\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reintegrate into civilian life<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. At the University of Washington, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n <a href=\"\/blog\/hike\/can-hiking-help-heal-veterans-with-ptsd-researchers-seek-to-find-out\">ongoing<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/hike\/can-hiking-help-heal-veterans-with-ptsd-researchers-seek-to-find-out\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> started in 2018 with support from REI<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0aims to test the benefits of wilderness hiking as a treatment for PTSD among veterans. Lead researcher Greg Bratman is currently looking at the effects of nature on veterans\u2019 mental and physical health in urban settings (like walks in city centers) compared with more rural settings, like\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mountainscapes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In Austin, Texas, researcher David Scheinfeld is doing similar work, focusing on how veterans respond to Outward Bound programs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outwardbound.org\/lib\/file\/manager\/OBV_Research_Summary.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Early results<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0suggest the programs may improve interpersonal relations, boost\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">resilience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and improve a sense of purpose among veterans.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It&#8217;s expected that President Trump will sign the bill into law. Once he does, the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">new task force established by the act<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will spend time evaluating the research on nature&#8217;s impact on health to create programming that helps veterans use the outdoors, and public lands more specifically, to move through transitions and cope with mental health struggles like depression and PTSD.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDespite all the programs available for getting veterans out, we still don&#8217;t have enough veterans connecting to the outdoors across the country,\u201d says Stacy Bare, an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">06\u201307) and the founder of <\/span>Adventure Not War<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Great Outdoors Lab,<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> two organizations that study veterans and the outdoors, and aim to help get veterans outside. \u201cThis [new bill] will help to ensure outfitters and institutions that support outdoor connection can best engage and support time outdoors for veterans\u2014and most importantly support veterans becoming leaders in the outdoors.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scheinfeld\u2019s research also suggests that outdoor therapy may invite less stigma than talk therapy, especially among veterans. Talk therapy, which involves sitting in a room with a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">therapist and discussing your emotions, can be intimidating, especially for those who come from a work or personal culture where discussing one\u2019s feelings is seen as taboo.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSitting in an office environment [for therapy] can seem sterile,\u201d Toft says of the bill\u2019s potential programming, which could one day include programs like Outward Bound, meaning therapeutic conversations would occur in the wild rather than in an office. \u201cWhen you\u2019re walking and talking, you\u2019re much more likely to be open and less guarded, so you can release what you\u2019ve been holding inside.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The transition back to civilian life after seven years as a forward observer in the Army was more difficult than REI Regional Product Insights Manager Jason Knode expected.
