One word, like a photo, can hold a depth of stories. As the plane approached Bastia I stared down at the vast coastline, wondering what the upcoming week on Corsica would reveal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first thing you notice arriving on Corsica is the beauty every<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where at once. The eye cannot\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">decide where to put its focus. In one direction, clear,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">turquoise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0waters reach toward sandy bays<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and delicately placed old forts, while in the other direction, la<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">yers of looming granite spires\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fade in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to the distance.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each breath inflates your lungs with the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unique aroma of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maquis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scent so unmistakably wild and aromatic, it was the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">way marker<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for N<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">apoleon Bonaparte returning to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his homeland. Then comes the reminder you are indeed on an islan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d and island time. Everything,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">everyone appears more relaxed and seemingly prideful in a sl<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ower pace of life than on \u201cthe\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">continent,\u201d as mainland France is\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">affectionately\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">referred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"801\" width=\"1200\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.arcteryx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/190610_Corsica_06266shrp.jpg?resize=1200%2C801&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Time here feels slower, well-aged.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over centuries of Italian and French rule, Corsica has developed a distinct culture and cuisine.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The island<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is full of familiar dishes with an entirely Corsican variation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the 1500s, a couple hundred years before the centuries of Italian ruling ended,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0landowners were required\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">plant four trees each year \u2013 olive, chestnut, fig, and mulberry. The chestnut became an integral component of the economy and the food. The wild boar\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0them producing the distinct\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">figatellu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sausage. Chestnut flour began to be used in breads, pastries, pastas, and in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">moderna<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Corsica\u2019s most popular<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0beer,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pietra<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"801\" width=\"1200\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.arcteryx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/190614_Corsica_06926shrp.jpg?resize=1200%2C801&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is with concerted effort and passing of traditions that the particular palette here developed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flavours<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of these resilient and resourceful people is most apparent in the brocciu cheese, used in numerous recipes including\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fiadone<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a cheesecake a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lso utilizing chestnut flour. Brocciu resembles ricotta, but is made from ewe\u2019s milk. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unlike ricotta,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it is not the curds, but the whey used to create brocciu. Shepherds not wanting to waste a drop of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">valuable milk<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0developed a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">method<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to make the whey<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0recipe\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">passed on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Corsica derives its name from Greek for of the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sirens<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A more than fitting name for a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0place with an ancient tradition of polyphonic choruses,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">shimmering coastlines,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a vast\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and varied\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mountain w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ilderness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Roads connecting villages cling to the mountainsides.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And through the middle of this remarkable island lay the GR20, a test of resilience for all who are drawn to its hypnotic song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The GR20 is one of many\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grande\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Randonn\u00e9e<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0footpaths in Europe, but is given the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">honour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of being the most difficult. A\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">claim seemingly unchallenged, which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0builds\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the mystique<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0surrounding the terrain that lies within.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"801\" width=\"1200\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.arcteryx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/190614_Corsica_06545shrp.jpg?resize=1200%2C801&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The north to south adventure of the GR20 begins with the smell of the sea and quickly ascends through pine forests and flowing pools of clear green water to shale-covered scrambles and the first views of Monte\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cintu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the tallest peak on this mountain in the sea.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The trail is unfiltered and raw. The ascents and descents are as aggressive as the flora.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The terrain is so incredibly challenging it gives<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 more accurately forces a stop \u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to admire sweeping views below and the coastline far in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">distance. It beckons you to pause<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, let the mind rest before tackling another stretch. But\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">q<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ui\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n\u2019avance<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0pas,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recule<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"801\" width=\"1200\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.arcteryx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/190610_Corsica_06377ftn.jpg?resize=1200%2C801&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond Monte\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cintu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the glacial lakes of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vall\u00e9e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0de la\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Restonica<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">moments of respite, flowing trails beside wild horse\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">populated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">marshes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, rolling through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0verdant land under a scorching sun. They are short lived though as towering scramble ascents postpone substantial progress. There are sections where a single misstep could be perilous. Each step must be carefully planned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"801\" width=\"1200\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.arcteryx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/190609_Corsica_05547shrp.jpg?resize=1200%2C801&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the fringes of the mountains,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">villages\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hang with ease.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Quiet streets are a sign<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">villageois<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0all gathered at the caf\u00e9 for cards<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ime to cure food and relationships. To experience the villages is to see the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ancient\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time of Corsica, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ut to venture through the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prehistoric\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mountains exposes its heart.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">traversing the spectacularly difficult\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aiguilles de\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bavella<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the nearby glittering coastal city of Porto Vecchio\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">offers regenerative soaks in the Mediterranean. A picturesque view to reflect on the toil of time on the GR20. There are many words I could use to describe this place.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Distinct. Rugged.
