We stand for\u00a0<\/span>racial\u00a0<\/span>equity<\/span>. But we know that\u00a0<\/span>for many people and communities, being able to live safely<\/span> and openly<\/span>\u00a0with equitable access to opportunities and a sense of belonging in the outdoors\u00a0<\/span>still isn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0a reality<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are challenging ourselves and our more than 19 million\u00a0<\/span>co-op\u00a0<\/span>members<\/span>\u00a0to do more<\/span>: L<\/span>isten, learn, reflect, speak up and act against racial injustice\u00a0<\/span>in the larger society as well as in the outdoors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For more than a decade, REI has partnered\u00a0<\/span>and collaborated\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>a wide range of\u00a0<\/span>organizations that\u00a0<\/span>support<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>BIPOC (Black, Indigenous<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0People of Color) communities<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>strive for a more inclusive outdoors<\/span>, including\u00a0<\/span>those listed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>below<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Through our partnerships, we have provided financial and in-kind support<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0co-hosted special events, workshops and trainings<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0amplified the work of the group<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0through films, articles and podcasts<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0and collaborated on major programs like\u00a0<\/span>#OptOutside<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Hear Her Out<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>response to\u00a0<\/span>current events highlighting hundreds of years of\u00a0<\/span>systemic\u00a0<\/span>racism and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pervasive<\/span>\u00a0violence against the Black community<\/span>, we\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>donating<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to the\u00a0<\/span>National Urban League<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>NAACP Legal Defense Fund<\/span><\/a>\u2014two<\/span>\u00a0historic civil rights organizations that work to fight injustice and inequality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0<\/span>commit<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>continue\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>our partners<\/span>, employees<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0members<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0using<\/span>\u00a0our brand platform<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to advocate for\u00a0<\/span>greater racial equity and inclusion in the outdoors<\/span>\u00a0and across American society more broadly<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>recognize that\u00a0<\/span>BIPOC communities\u00a0<\/span>often face additional discrimination\u00a0<\/span>when\u00a0<\/span>they are\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>part of other marginalized groups.\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>one of the reasons<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019re committed to advancing equity for women, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities and others that face barriers to belonging<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Together, each of us can help create a more just outdoor community and society<\/span>. A<\/span>dvocating\u00a0for change<\/span>, listening to others<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>contributing your time, talent or money<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>or finding your community by joining their programs\u00a0<\/span>are all great ways to be involved<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Learn more about\u00a0<\/span>some of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the organizations that we partner with<\/span>, their programs<\/span>\u00a0and their mission<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and ways you can support them<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Here are a few examples<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>groups we support.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Black Girls Do Bike<\/a><\/h4>\n

The group grows and supports a community of women of color who share a passion for cycling. Black Girls Do Bike champions efforts to introduce the joy of cycling to all women, but especially women and girls of color. Support Black Girls Do Bike here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Black Girls RUN!<\/a><\/h4>\n

In 2009, Black Girls RUN! was created in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the Black community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. GirlTrek<\/a><\/h4>\n

The public health nonprofit encourages African American women and girls to use walking as a practical first step to inspire healthy living, families and communities. Nearly 100,000 neighborhood walkers are part of the GirlTrek community. Its goal is to pioneer a health movement for African American women and girls grounded in civil rights history and principles through walking campaigns, community leadership and health advocacy. Inclusive Woods & Us<\/a><\/h4>\n

The aim of Inclusive Woods and Us is to increase equitable access to the outdoors for children, families and communities of people of color in lower socioeconomic standing as a way to improve the physical, mental and spiritual health of vulnerable populations. Outdoor Afro<\/a><\/h4>\n

Outdoor Afro celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. The national nonprofit helps people take better care of themselves, their communities and the planet. It aims to empower women through mindfulness in the outdoors, while facilitating personal alignment and growth. Fresh Tracks<\/a><\/h4>\n

Fresh\u00a0Tracks is an outdoors initiative for youth that was inspired in 2015 by a call from President Obama for bold new programs that use the outdoors to broaden horizons for young Americans facing persistent opportunity gaps. It provides \u201cyoung Indigenous, rural and urban diverse leaders with cross-cultural community power building, leadership development, civic engagement and action training.\u201d In spring 2020, it officially joined<\/a> the Aspen Institute\u2019s Forum for Community Solutions team. \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Friends of Momentum Bike Clubs\u00a0<\/a><\/h4>\n

Momentum Bike Club works with youths age 10 to 18 to promote exercise and healthy peer and mentor relationships.\u00a0<\/span>Founded in 2010, the organization is premised on the belief that youth and caregivers thrive when living in\u00a0<\/span>inclusive and supportive\u00a0<\/span>communities<\/span>. The Detroit Leadership and Environmental Education program uses a project-based, outdoor environmental curriculum to help high school students connect with nature, build a more sustainable community and prepare for future success in their academic and career endeavors. Through DLEEP and other efforts in Detroit, NWF Regional Lakes aims to cultivate the next generation of conservation and environmental leadership, inclusive of urban communities too often excluded in leadership. This is vital because these communities have far too often been on the front line, first impacted by pollution, climate change and environmental racism. This youth development organization offers programs that use bikes as a tool for positive transformation. The program ranges from weekend excursions to multiweek expeditions that inspire leadership and friendship in youth as they learn the power of the outdoors.
