Follow local guidelines regarding travel, and check access to local, state and national parks before you visit. Remember that outdoor recreation has inherent risks; don\u2019t attempt activities beyond your experience and skill level. Your actions may present risk not only to you, but to your local community during these challenging times.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With at least<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/coronavirus-stay-at-home-order.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 196 million U.S. residents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under orders to stay home to help stem the spread of coronavirus, some recreationists are asking if it\u2019s OK to get outside for activities such as walking, running or biking. In many cases, public health officials and other experts say the answer is yes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as long as you\u2019re not sick, adhere to local orders, and practice social distancing and common sense.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandatory stay-at-home orders often allow exceptions for engaging in activities outdoors, generally close to home, like walking your dog, riding a bike or going on a run (if you stay at least 6 feet away from others). <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.health.ny.gov\/new-york-state-pause\">New York state guidelines<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, allow for outdoor recreation, though \u201cindividuals should \u2026 avoid activities where they come in close contact with other people.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.ca.gov\/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California officials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0say residents \u201ccan walk, run, hike and bike in their local neighborhoods as long as they continue to practice social distancing of 6 feet.\u201d (But they specifically tell people to avoid crowded trails and parking lots.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prepare\/transmission.html,\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0COVID-19 is thought to spread easily and mainly person to person: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etween people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet);\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am encouraging people to get outside in this time of social distancing, but being smart about it,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sean O\u2019Leary, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics\u2019 Committee on Infectious Diseases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a pediatric infectious disease specialist with Children\u2019s Hospital Colorado, adding that \u201cbeing outdoors, whether it\u2019s simply walking or exercising, has shown over the years to improve mental health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever you do outside, practice social distancing, which means keep at least 6 feet away from others to avoid contracting or spreading the virus, the CDC says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe give a 6-foot distance based on the distance the particles travel after a sick person coughs or sneezes in calm conditions,\u201d says Brian Labus, assistant professor in the University of Las Vegas School of Public Health, who served as senior epidemiologist for the Southern Nevada Health District for 15 years. \u201cIf you are running a few feet behind someone on a windy day and they turn their head and sneeze, that sneeze could land on you. You just have to be smart about it and take the environment into account.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-article_body wp-image-151865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/Recreate-Responsibly_01_Content_Team_012418_76439.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are seven other tips to get outside while social distancing:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Check specific guidelines in your community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know the rules for where you live. Guidelines, along with park and trail closures, are changing rapidly. Information provided here was accurate at the time of publication but may have since changed, so check with your local or state public health agency and public land managers to get the latest information.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.ca.gov\/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.health.ny.gov\/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/govstatus.egov.com\/or-covid-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.illinois.gov\/sites\/coronavirus\/FAQ\/Pages\/default.aspx#h11\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.nj.gov\/faqs\/nj-information\/general-public\/governor-murphy-announces-statewide-stay-at-home-order-closure-of-all-non-essential-retail-businesses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jersey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.wa.gov\/whats-open-and-closed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other states that have issued mandatory orders for residents to stay at home have made certain exceptions for engaging in outdoor activities such as walking, running or biking as long as people maintain social distancing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridastateparks.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstateparks.org\/index.cfm?do=v.dsp_featureArticle&amp;articleId=272\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other communities such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parks.lacounty.gov\/covid-19-032320\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles County<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shuttered parks, trails or other recreation areas to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the crowds seen in recent days that have made social distancing difficult. Federal officials have closed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/learn\/news\/20013.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellowstone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/grsm\/planyourvisit\/temproadclose.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Smoky Mountains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other national parks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Stay local, avoid crowded places<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some states or communities have officially closed parks, trails and campgrounds and discouraged people from traveling to popular recreation spots, you may still be able to get a dose of nature close to home. Consider exploring open spaces in your community to get your outdoor fix. Traveling to recreational spots often means stopping for gas, groceries or bathroom breaks along the way, potentially putting you and others in those communities at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/americanalpineclub.org\/news\/2020\/3\/17\/climbers-take-action-against-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Alpine Club asks climbers to limit recreation-based travel beyond their community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhile outdoor time is necessary for each of us during this turbulent period, we need to stay local and limit our interaction with vulnerable communities,\u201d the club said on its website.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid popular parks that typically attract a lot of people<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or that you know don\u2019t have enough open space to allow for proper social distancing. Crowded parking lots, beach access points or trailheads make it much harder to stay 6 feet from others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Go solo (or only with your household)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOutdoor recreation is a solitary recreational exercise,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q6_4VBGOSq0\">New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in announcing his state\u2019s restrictions. \u201cIt\u2019s running. It&#8217;s hiking. It&#8217;s not playing basketball with five other people. That&#8217;s not what it is. It&#8217;s not laying in a park with 10 other people and sharing a beer. That&#8217;s not what this is.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although adhering to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prepare\/prevention.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC\u2019s social distancing guidelines <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means group hikes or playing team sports are out, in many cases, you may still have the freedom to explore your local wild trails alone or take a solo bike ride around your neighborhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have no medical reason not to exercise and are not sick including with mild (upper respiratory infection) symptoms, then yes you should definitely exercise,\u201d says Dr. Mark Harrast, a\u202fsports medicine\u202fphysician and\u202fmedical director\u202fof the\u202fSports Medicine Center\u202fat the University of Washington\u2019s Husky Stadium.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider running with a family member if you want, but don\u2019t meet up with a regular running buddy for a run if you\u2019re not living and interacting regularly with that person already, says Harrast, who occasionally runs with his kids in a jogging stroller.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Families can consider walking together in places where they can keep a 6 foot distance from others, says Dr. Dori Rosenberg, affiliate associate professor of the University of Washington Department of Health Services, School of Public Health. But she adds this reminder: There are a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lot of physical activities people can do inside, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/fitness\/ideas-for-keeping-kids-active-when-home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including dance parties or setting up indoor physical activity or exercise circuits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Practice excellent hygiene <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before, during and after spending time outdoors, follow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prepare\/prevention.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to protect yourself from COVID-19, including washing your hands often and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFollow general precautions that you would do anyplace that you aren\u2019t familiar with,\u201d says Harrast. He offered these other tips:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid touching surfaces and touching your face while out. \u201cDo not touch park benches, pull-up bars, park bathroom sinks and buttons for crosswalks with your hands (or wear gloves and wash your hands).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carry hand sanitizer with you in case you accidentally do touch something that hasn\u2019t been disinfected.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid drinking from public water fountains, given other people\u2019s noses and mouths get close to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wash your hands when you get home.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Exercise at less popular times<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGo at times when others are not there. Avoid times when lots of people are out,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Leary says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aim for times of the day when roads or paths are empty, such as early morning or later at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the spot where you choose to recreate is too crowded when you arrive, be prepared to leave<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cCome back later or try someplace new\u202frather than put each other at risk,\u201d the Washington Trails Association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wta.org\/go-outside\/social-distancing-hiking-in-the-time-of-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says on its website.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThere&#8217;s room for all of us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he National Recreation and Park Association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrpa.org\/blog\/keeping-a-safe-social-distance-in-parks-and-on-trails-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cWarn other trail users of your presence and as you pass to allow proper distance and step off trails to allow others to pass, keeping minimum recommended distances at all times. Signal your presence with your voice, bell or horn.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-article_body wp-image-151861 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/Recreate-Responsibly_Hero_Content_Team_071819_00006.jpg?resize=1024%2C576\" alt=\"A woman jogs solo by a body of water\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t linger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While getting exercise outside is often considered an essential activity under these orders, the idea is to stay at home as much as possible<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to plan a day outing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday acknowledged the need to get outside and get exercise, but he urged people to keep it short.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely normal and human to want to get outside, get a little bit of exercise. But I remind you the pause is all about social distancing. It\u2019s all about protecting ourselves and our families and each other,\u201d de Blasio said during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/178-20\/mayor-de-blasio-nypd-prepare-enforce-new-guidelines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a press briefing Sunday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we say you can go out for some exercise, we\u2019re not saying you can linger. We\u2019re not saying you can make a day of it. We\u2019re saying go out, get a minimum amount of exercise, get what you need and go back indoors.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Take a walk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting outside can be as simple as taking a stroll alone or with your family around your neighborhood. \u201cAt this time, walking is a wonderful exercise that people can do safely outside as long as you can stay 6 feet from others,\u201d says Dr. Rosenberg.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPhysical activity has innumerable health benefits including when performed outdoors,\u201d she says. \u201cIt improves mood, reduces anxiety, improves cardiovascular health and supports functional health.
