When it comes to politics, REI maintains a strongly nonpartisan stance. At the same time, we do support an active electorate.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"\/blog\/tag\/representing-the-outdoors\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representing the Outdoors<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series is to educate our readers about their elected officials and the outdoor issues that matter to them. To produce the series, we asked policymakers the same set of nine questions about the outdoors. These are their responses. These are experiences that leave you more balanced and appreciative for the serenity of our public lands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What\u2019s your favorite piece of outdoor gear and what do you love about it?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"\/b\/cotopaxi\">Cotopaxi<\/a> tent\u2014it\u2019s durable, with a simple setup that will keep you dry. Paired with a <a href=\"\/b\/therm-a-rest\">Therm-a-Rest<\/a> self-inflating mat makes for a great night\u2019s sleep no matter the conditions!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What are the outdoor places in your state or district that people should visit?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Mexico is home to some of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in the country. The San Juan River, the Upper Pecos and Costilla Creek are great for fly fishing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chcu\/index.htm\">Chaco Culture National Historical Park<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/vall\/index.htm\">Valles Caldera National Preserve<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/visit\/rgdnnm\">Rio Grande del Norte National Monument<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/new-mexicos-white-sands-becomes-newest-national-park\">White Sands National Monument<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/programs\/national-conservation-lands\/new-mexico\/organ-mountains-desert-peaks-national-monument\">Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument<\/a> are a few of the must-visit parks and monuments in New Mexico that will leave you breathless. My recommendation would be to stop for some Hatch green chile when you visit!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What are the most pressing conservation and stewardship issues our country currently faces?<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservation and stewardship are more critical now than ever. With efforts from those in power to sell these lands off to the highest bidders, we must fight back against these efforts and ensure our public lands can be enjoyed for generations to come\u2014and that includes addressing <a href=\"\/blog\/tag\/climate-change\">climate change<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What role can the outdoors play in promoting health and well-being among U.S. citizens?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With millions of acres of public lands across America, there are ample opportunities for Americans to get outside, enjoy that fresh air, and embark on adventures. As a New Mexican, I\u2019ve always enjoyed hiking and mountain biking on our public lands with family and friends. Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n sets up hi favorite tent\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-119292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Representative Luj\u00e1n<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>What do you see as the biggest threat to public lands and waters today?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The urgent threat of the climate crisis poses a major risk to America\u2019s public lands and waters\u2014and climate change won\u2019t be resolved without bold, decisive action to bolster the clean energy economy, cut methane pollution and promote renewable energy. Communities across the country are already seeing the dire effects of climate change, and it\u2019s time that we all demand climate action now to protect our public lands and waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Why is access to public lands, parks and waters important to you?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is nothing more peaceful and grounding as exploring our public lands. My appreciation for the generations that came before us\u2014who had the vision to protect these sacred places for future generations\u2014is endless. We all have a responsibility to protect our home and leave things better than when we found them. Our public lands help drive local economies, bring communities and families together, and remind us of the natural beauty of our country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What impact does the outdoor recreation economy stand to make nationwide?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The burgeoning <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/numbers-show-size-of-the-outdoor-recreation-economy-at-the-state-level\">outdoor recreation economy<\/a> is a unique and exciting opportunity to grow America\u2019s economy and create green, good-paying jobs for our families and young people. In New Mexico, the outdoor recreation economy is booming, and we\u2019re seeing a renewed love among young people for both getting outdoors and protecting our environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What\u2019s a policy solution for the outdoors you\u2019re working on?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, I helped fight to permanently reauthorize the <a href=\"\/blog\/news\/heres-how-you-can-support-the-land-and-water-conservation-fund\">Land and Water Conservation Fund<\/a>\u2014and we were successful! I\u2019m continuing my efforts to protect our public lands and sacred sites from drilling and extraction, including the greater Chaco Canyon region in New Mexico\u2014and working toward solutions for the climate crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the co-op, we believe the outdoors is a place to find common ground with people from all backgrounds and political affiliations.
