Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
For being a Gerber I had higher expectations. Short handle makes this axe hard to use for anything larger than kindling. Knife in the bottom falls out easily. Would rather just throw an extra knife in the bag if it is really necessary. Because it is lighter and the handle is shorter you don't quite get the momentum or leverage needed to cut well. I would agree that given an emergency situation this would come in handy but I am the type that will carry the extra weight if it is practical. Would rather have a longer and/or heavier axe.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
Love Gerber, but this one misses the mark. Not only does it seem too short to get a good balanced swing, the knife magnet leaves something to be desired. I generally remove the knife when using the hatchet, but recently failed to do so in an attempt to set tent stakes in windy and oncoming rain. Knife slid out on the upstroke and gave nice puncture wound on the down stroke. I agree, not intelligent, and my fault, but still not a good design.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
As another reviewer stated, both the axe and knife were quite dull out of the package. However after shapening them, I have been quite pleasently supprised with how well they work. The knife takes a great edge and seems to keep it pretty well, comfortable in the hand and does not slip. The axe is a great chopper for it's size, and I have used it on many trips. I prefer it to a similar sized Gransfors for those who know what that means. I usually toss it in a pack and forget it is there until I need it.
Great by and I would get another for my son once he is able to get one in boyscouts.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
I bought this axe because i like Gerber products. I still like Gerber products, but after using this axe once I returned it. It was dull out of the box, but that wasn't the crux for me (getting it sharpened is no problem). When using the backside of the axe as a hammer (pounding in tent stakes) the knife consistently fell out of the handle. the first time it happened it fell on my foot, luckily the handle of the knife hit first. So, if you place on using this, you'll need to use a piece of tape to hold the knife in.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
Great little tool! The set came sharp, but I can't leave things alone and sharpened them to my liking. The knife is good for small jobs without being too big, cleaning small game, small carving chores. The knife handle may be a bit short for big hands, but it's not meant for heavy use. The thumb grooves on the back of the blade are good to strike a firesteel with. Hatchet does a good job of splitting wood, sharpening sticks, etc. the handle is short ,I feel this maybe safer because you can only use it for what it's meant for.GET A SAW TO CUT STICKS YOU CAN'T BREAK!!! Knife retention could be better but just take it out to use the hatchet,or make a alternative retention system for backup to the magnets. I keep mine on my pack and use the old duct tape to keep the knife from falling out.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
Used it for a short three day camping trip to split logs into kindling. I didn't realize it came dull out of the box, but that was no big deal. Like many other reviewers, I take the knife out of the handle for safety's sake when chopping, so I didn't feel the knife in the handle was unsafe. It was great to have such a small axe to pack away in my backpack instead of lugging around my larger hatchet.

Perfect for what it is. Axe head does come dull out of the package. Not for actually chopping down a tree, but great for splitting kindling, removing small limbs. Knife sharp and handy, though tends to come loose.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
This axe worked out great for gathering firewood at the campsite. I would suggest removing the knife before using the axe because it tends to move around inside during use. Other than that it is a good compact axe to add to any backpack.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
It's a very nice combination of tools. The hatchet is light and well balanced and very effective, as long as you sharpen it prior to your first use. The knife is the perfect size and shape for carving and whittling. I can definitely see this tool being useful in a survival situation. That being said, i found the problems with this design a little frustrating too. The knife doesn't stay in the handle well while you're swinging the hatchet real hard, it pops out when you put any sort of large force into your swings. This is potentially dangerous.
If you price other Gerber hatchets and axes though, the combo is really a nice deal.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
The hatchet was dull out of the box (to prevent accidents? Who knows.) but the knife was nice and sharp. I haven't had any trouble with the magnets that hold the knife in the handle of the hatchet, but I wouldn't have minded seeing some sort of locking strap as well for extra precaution. If I'm ever in doubt I usually take the knife out of the handle. Why risk injury? Other than that, it packs well, and it's sheath is durable. I have mine placed on the outside of my pack for easy access to the knife.
