Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe II:

I've owned two of these. Both of them broke after one day of use. The head is *not* actually attached to the handle. Rather some sort of synthetic supports run lengthwise through the outer skin of the handle up until they arrive at the head of the hatchet. At that point, the outer skin that wraps the handle extends partially around the head holding the entire thing together. The first model that i owned broke during a down swing nearly taking my foot off, and the second model i owned broke during an upswing sending the head flying off into the night to my extreme panic. Don't get this. It looks really great but it is not. My friend found a [$]hatchet at a discount retailer of comparable weight, and solid construction. The blade was of markedly inferior quality and the handle was less comfortable, however, it didn't break.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe II:

I own many Gerber products and enjoy the quality of them all, however this is not one of them. The saw, which is held in place by a small magnet, is a pointless add on. It ended up falling out on the first trip I took it on. The hatchet held a nice edge but the handle ended up breaking after a few months use. Not worth the money in my opinion.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe II:

I have mostly used this axe for overnight trips and car camping. The head is molded into the handle, so you cannot use it to hammer tent stakes. It can be annoying to carry a second hammer for tent stakes, but I am buying a shovel with a hammer built in so that may remedy the problem. Otherwise the axe is great holds an edge pretty well. The saw in the handle is more gimmick than anything. I use it occasionally but it's not nearly as usefull as I thought it would be.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe II:

I like gerber products, I own a gerber knife for years that has been cutting through everything (wood, plastic, steaks etc) and is still going sharp and strong. This axe is pretty good, sharp, has a good grip and does the job nicely. It is a bit expensive (a similar axe at any retailer costs fifth the price of this). It is my opinion that for the money, this axe could have been (and probably should have been) lighter while being tougher. The saw is a total gimmick. The best analogy is the cameras in cell phones (they are always mediocre). If you want a saw, buy a good saw to do the job, not a combo. All in all, a good axe that falls short as it could be cheaper and lighter carrying around for backpacking and primitive camping.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe II:

I bought this as an augment to my folding saw, mainly for splitting medium size logs. On my second outing, the handle snapped off about an inch below the head when I was trying break it loose from being jammed in a partially split log. In over 40 years of camping and forestry work I have never broken and axe or hatchet this way. I did NOT hit the handle on anything.

It's made of nice material, I worry if the handle will break, came less then sharp but easily sharpened with simple sharpening stone, most of the weight is in the front making it a bit awkward but all and all, fairly decent hatchet.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe II:

I have to say I wasn't entirely impressed, neither was I disappointed.

New, the blade was decently sharp, which was a plus, because we bought this on the way out of town. We ended up hacking our own trail for the last 3 miles of our hike, so having this came in very handy. The saw is a bit of a joke. I can't imagine a situation in which I would prefer to use the saw than the hatchet, if I had both - it's not like you can cut any sizable logs with a six inch saw. However, you can give the saw to your friend, so you can both go off to gather wood, which increases the effectiveness of the tool. However, without the saw in the handle, the weight of the hatchet is a bit weird.

The head of mine didn't fly off like other users, nor did it seem loose by the end of our 5 day trip. The handle grip might actually be a bit too sticky, but we were using loads of DEET on the trip, which would increase any handle's abrasiveness. Also, I would have liked to have a notch in the cutting side for nail/tent spike removal.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe II:

I got this specifically to take Backpacking. Its a decent axe. We used it quite a bit over the two nights cutting up nice sized logs into more manageable sizes to burn. It did seem to get fairly dull after the weekend, but it was used on a lot of hard woods. It went through a lot of abuse and held up quite well.

As for the person who stated that the head flew off two of his. Any axe will do that when you hit the handle grip more than the axe head. This thing worked great on a lot of very hard wood. I am very pleased with it. The axe head is still completely sturdy in the handle.

The Saw is a bit cheesy, but I understand its function. I didnt need it at all during the trip. It was a bit of an annoyance to have in the axe when chopping. I ended up just taking it out when I would use the axe.
