REI Chicago Get Involved with Parks Events (October 20th through October 24th)

The recent PBS Ken Burns Documentary Americas Best Idea highlights the history of Americas National Parks. Join REI for a week long celebration of our local parks and forest preserves. Each REI store event will also be conducting a sweepstakes to win the full 12 hour DVD documentary Americas Best Idea. Please read below for the different REI store events:

Hidden Gems: A Guide to Chicagos Little Known Parks: Tuesday, October 20th 7:00 to 8:00pm
Location: 1466 N. Halsted, Chicago IL 60642
Join REI and Friends of the Parks President, Erma Tranter, as we celebrate the release of the PBS Ken Burns documentary The National Parks: Americas Best Idea.
Erma will present a guide to Chicago?s little known parks; you my find a petting zoo or historical features in your neck of the woods! Refreshments will be served and REI will be raffling off one copy of this amazing documentary full of stories and stunning imagery of Americas National Parks.

A Photographic Journey through the National Parks: Thursday, October 22nd 7:00 to 8:00 pm
Location: 17 West 160 22nd St. Oakbrook Terrace IL 60181
Join REI staff member Dan Nicholas as he shares photos he has taken on quest to visit every National Park. Aside from working at REI, Dan is a professional photographer and had been to almost half of the National Parks. Refreshments will be served and REI will be raffling off one copy of this amazing documentary full of stories and stunning imagery of Americas National Parks.


A History of The Forest Preserve District of Cook County: Thursday, October 22nd 7:00 to 8:00pm

Join REI and John Elliott from the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, as we celebrate the release of the PBS Ken Burns documentary The National Parks: Americas Best Idea.
With over 200 picnic groves, over 100 miles of paved bicycle trails, over 200 miles of multi-use trails for equestrians, hikers, and XC-skiers, 10 golf courses, 4 driving ranges, 5 toboggan slides and much much more, the network of forest preserves in Cook County is a vast natural resource. These areas that we enjoy are also steeped in history! Join John Elliott for a fascinating multi-media presentation about the history of the Forest Preserves in Cook County! Refreshments will be served and REI will be raffling off a copy of Ken Burns? amazing documentary full of stories and stunning imagery of Americas National Parks.


Park Restoration Work Day: Saturday, October 24th 9:00am to noon
Dunning Read Conservation Area
On Saturday, October 24, REI, Friends of the Parks and the Dunning Volunteers will lead a trail-building workday to lay a linking trail that will open up access to more of the site?s natural wonders. Volunteers will help spread woodchips to create the trail and may also have the opportunity to participate in ecological restoration in certain areas through cutting out invasive brush and weeds. Gloves and tools will be provided. Please call 312-951-6020 to register your spot and direct questions via email to Claire Hurwitz at churwit@rei.com. All volunteers will receive an REI water bottle while supplies last.

Make a Difference Day: Service Project: Saturday, October 24th 9:00am to noon
East Branch Preserve in Glendale Hts
The DuPage County Forest Preserve?s where created in 1915 and where the 5th of it?s kind in the nation. The District now owns or manages over 25,000 acres of land, about 12% of the total land in DuPage County. Within these 25,000 acres are 600 acres of lakes, 47 miles of rivers and streams and over 145 miles of trails. East Branch Forest Preserve is largely a natural wetland along the East Branch of the DuPage River, with open water lakes, marshes, and wildlife habitats. It is an excellent place for wildlife watching and recreation. The preserve also provides valuable benefits to the community in the form of storm water control and improved water quality. Join us today to help keep this park beautiful. All tools will be provided including work gloves. Please dress for the weather. Drinking water and bathrooms are on site.
