REI Gives: 2009 Austin Area Grant Recipients

2009 - 2010

Annually, REI dedicates a portion of its operating profits to help protect and restore the environment, increase access to outdoor activities, and encourage involvement in responsible outdoor recreation. REI employees nominate organizations, projects, and programs in which they are personally involved to receive funding or gear donations.

Austin Ridge Riders Mountain Bike Club: AUSTIN RIDGE RIDERS
2009-2010 TRAILS PROGRAM
The Austin Ridge Riders Mountain Bike Club is working to increase the total amount of trail mileage open to mountain biking in the Austin area. In the coming year, the Ridge Riders will lead three separate and concurrent trail extension projects that will add 14 miles of additional recreational opportunities and help distribute the increasing demand for mountain biking trails. The trails will serve three distinct areas of high population growth. REI's funding will provide volunteer incentives and additional tools and equipment to facilitate the simultaneous implementation of these projects.

Hill Country Conservancy Inc:
Regional Walk For A Day Trail Building Workshops
The Hill Country Conservancy (HCC) is an integral partner in the planning and construction of what will become a regional 'Walk-For-A-Day' (WFAD) trail system stretching throughout the Austin area. To begin official trail work on the WFAD trail, HCC will host a large scale workday to focus on proper instruction of trail building skills, erosion control, and drainage repair to teach proper techniques and trail use etiquette. The trail workday will provide an opportunity for volunteers to learn about designing sustainable trails that reduce maintenance needs while providing a perfect outdoor experience for visitors to learn about land and water conservation in an outdoor recreational capacity. REI's grant will support the event and will equip long-term volunteers with gear to help them in their efforts.

American Youthworks:
Environmental Corps - Leadership Development Training
American YouthWork's Environmental Corps (E-Corps) is a service-learning program operating out of Austin, TX . E-Corps focuses on the career development of youth members while providing environmental conservation services to the community. The Leader Development Program is a project designed to develop the leadership skills of qualified E-Corps members, who will then serve as mentors to conservation crews. REI's grant will increase the E-corps' service capacity and the youth enrollment in the programc by providing funding for necessary medical training and camping equipment for overnight projects.

Austin Parks Foundation:
Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail Signage Project
Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail is over 8 miles of rugged natural surface trail used by hikers, runners and cyclists alike. Despite the high level of usage and accessibility for urban residents of Austin, the Greenbelt Trail currently lacks directional signage to guide users throughout its 7 official access points and multiple trail segments. The Austin Parks Foundation will install clear directional signage at 40 major intersections of the trail using materials and design that have proven their effectiveness and durability in other trail areas. REI's grant will supply project supplies that will be used by volunteers to complete the installations.

Girl Scouts of Central Texas:
Girl Scout Rock Climbing Interest Group
The Girl Scouts of Central Texas annual rock climbing event has generated tremendous interest, excitement and engagement among middle school and high school aged girls. REI's grant will fund the start up of a rock climbing interest group for 6-12 grade girls in the greater Austin area. Specifically, grant funding will be used to purchase gear for monthly rock climbing instruction sessions. These courses will teach girls the basics of climbing techniques, belaying methods, and proper safety procedures. After completing one of these courses, girls will have an opportunity to participate in four extended weekend climbing trips.

YMCA of Greater Williamson County:
YMCA Outdoor Education Program
The YMCA Outdoor Education Program focuses on students at all grade levels and partners with a wide range of local school districts. The YMCA's program is designed to work in cooperation with teachers and parents for the benefit of the student. Trained YMCA staff facilitators collaborate with the science, physical education and at-risk youth outreach departments at area schools to provide an enrichment-based, hands-on outdoor education. REI funds will support additional school and organizations' participation in the program. Specifically, REI's grant will support staff to organize and operate the program and will also provide outdoor equipment for youth to use during their outings.
