REI Gives: 2009 Sacramento Market Grants Recipients

2009 - 2010

Annually, REI dedicates a portion of its operating profits to help protect and restore the environment, increase access to outdoor activities, and encourage involvement in responsible outdoor recreation. REI employees nominate organizations, projects, and programs in which they are personally involved to receive funding or gear donations. For more information on REI grants, see http://www.rei.com/aboutrei/gives02.html.

Northern California High School Mountain Biking:
High School Mountain Biking Development Program
The High School Mountain Biking Development Program aims to expand the NorCal High School Mountain Bike League's capacity to provide cycling experiences to diverse and underserved high school aged youth in the Sacramento area who would otherwise have little opportunity to ride bikes and have ongoing outdoor experiences. The NorCal League will use REI's grant to offer a mountain bike camp and team development program and the resources needed to start mountain bike teams in low-income areas of Sacramento. The program's long-term goal will be to develop a national model for interscholastic cycling programs for underserved youth. REI grant funds will specifically support student scholarships and travel grants for program participants.

Placer Nature Center:
The Placer Nature Center will use REI's grant in support of a week-long summer nature camp for Placer County's underserved children between the ages of 6-12 years old. The week-long immersion into nature explorations will include plant and animal investigations, geology experiments, and stewardship concepts. Activities will range from observing bugs to climbing a rock wall. REI funds will support project coordination and teen volunteer training for the children's' day camp experience. REI volunteers will have an opportunity to get involved through PEAK programs, compass training or assistance with rock climbing.

Roberts Family Development Center:
Roberts Family Development Center (RFDC) will use REI's grant to expand its outdoor excursion program for urban youth. RFDC emphasizes stewardship of the natural world as part of its youth leadership and development curriculum. Youth learn stewardship lessons through participation in RFDC's summer camps and after-school programs and put these principles into practice through environmental clean-up projects in their communities. After taking part in local stewardship projects, youth gain an opportunity to learn more about stewardship of the natural world through participation in overnight outdoor excursions. REI's grant will provide tents, sleeping bags and sleeping pads to equip young people during their time outdoors.

American River Parkway Foundation:
The American River Parkway Foundation will use REI's grant to actively engage volunteers in the restoration of natural habitat within the American River Parkway ('Parkway'). The Foundation's Invasive Plant Removal Project (IPMP) will eradicate all invasive species from the Parkway while actively restoring native landscapes and continuing to build a long-term program of volunteer stewardship. REI's funds will support project coordination and will provide volunteers with tools and project supplies.

Truckee Donner Land Trust:
The Donner Lake Rim Trail, a project of the Truckee Donner Land Trust, provides non-motorized recreational choices in highly scenic and accessible areas in the Truckee Donner region. When complete, 23-miles of trail will encircle Donner Lake and provide a much-needed addition to local trails. REI's grant will help the Land Trust complete a new 2-mile section of trail and maintain an additional 9-miles of trail. Grant funds will be used to purchase supplies, signage and tools for trail construction; recruit and coordinate volunteers of all ages; and increase environmental awareness and recreation in the Truckee Donner community.

Friends of Folsom Parkways:
The Friends of Folsom Parkway will use REI's grant to expand its Adopt a Creek/Trail (ACT) program by involving additional teams of youth and adults. The purpose of the ACT program is to promote the use of the City of Folsom recreational trails for biking and hiking and to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area. REI's grant will provide project materials and gear such as GPS devices to assist volunteers in planning and coordinating their activities.

American River Conservancy:
Designed for middle and high school students, the American River Conservancy's P.E.E.R (Protection Education Ecological Restoration) program is a science-based program in which students participate in a field study at a regional trail park used for recreation and conservation. The field study program focuses on hands-on field work and stewardship. Funding from REI will provide project coordination to help educate students about the role of native plant species and riparian habitats in the South Fork American River watershed while promoting recreation in the outdoors. REI funds will also provide supplies to support student efforts to identify and monitor areas in need of restoration; restore riparian areas to a native assemblage of plant species to increase biodiversity and improve wildlife habitat at Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park.

Pacific Crest Trail Association:
The Pacific Crest Trail Association is the 7,800-member voice of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which spans 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. With REI's fundiing, they will be collaborating with the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew in the maintenance of the trail in remote areas of the Sierra National Forest. The High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew will perform three week-long projects. One week of the program will be a youth-specific project. The funding will provide the volunteer crew projects with base camp and project supplies, and ground transportation as well as meals for the crews. These projects will involve 40 volunteers who will collectively be donating 3,000 hours of labor.
